**Introduction**:
ICES is currently seeking a highly motivated Public Engagement & Knowledge Translation Officer to join our Science Office Department. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Public Engagement and Knowledge Translation, the Public Engagement & Knowledge Translation Officer is responsible for supporting public and community engagement activities in research and corporate initiatives. This role will work directly with scientists, public and community stakeholders to support integrated knowledge translation in ICES research.

**Responsibilities of the position include, but may not be limited to**:

- Support the ICES public engagement and knowledge translation team by providing guidance, input and expertise towards public and community engagement and knowledge translation (KT) initiatives;
- Support the implementation of a framework on the use of race and ethnicity data for health equity research at ICES;
- Coordinate and help plan capacity building and integrated knowledge translation events on community engagement with external and internal stakeholders;
- Coordinate requests and act as liaison for questions related to the principles and recommendations of race and ethnicity data use at ICES including guidance for community engagement;
- Support the development of a community governance table and community engagement guide to support the use of race and ethnicity data at ICES;
- Support opportunities for public and community engagement within corporate initiatives and research projects with public, policy makers, and health system stakeholders;
- Provide guidance to ICES scientists and staff to develop public and community engagement plans to incorporate public and relevant stakeholders’ perspectives into their projects;
- Assist with the creation of public-facing research presentations, materials and KT outputs;
- Develop feedback reports, summaries and research highlights to capture the value of public and community engagement in ICES activities;
- Compile and maintain inventories of public and community engagement best practices, literature, tools, resources and capacity building materials;
- Collaborate with the ICES Communications department and provide cross-coverage and assistance with transitioning projects from integrated to end-of-grant KT exercises;
- Other duties as may be assigned within the scope of this position.

**Knowledge, skills and abilities required**:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Health or Social Science, Health Policy, Public Health, Communications or related field;
- Two years or more of patient, community and/or public engagement experience within the health or research sector;
- Past experience in community activism, health equity and/or social justice work an asset;
- Demonstrated experience with designing and implementing KT initiatives;
- Experience facilitating or moderating public and/or community consultations;
- Strong facilitation skills, comfortable with running large group interactive discussions virtually and in-person and experience designing facilitation activities;
- Superior public relations and communications skills; proven ability to create welcome and comfortable space for difficult conversations with diverse audiences;
- Experience developing evidence-based tools and resources for education in KT, public or community engagement;
- Thorough understanding of KT, public and community engagement best practices, and ability to clearly explain and educate researchers on best practices;
- Ability to create open and safe spaces for discussion;
- Maintains strict confidence, as required, when interacting with stakeholders;
- In-depth knowledge of provincial and national healthcare, research and policy organizations and familiarity with key community organizations or advocacy groups;
- Proven ability to read and understand scientific literature, and experience with translating research materials into lay language for both general and targeted audiences;
