**POSITION**: Assistant Manager

**STATUS**: Permanent; Full-time

**SHIFT**: Thursday to Monday - 10 am to 6 pm -35 hours per week

**LOCATION**: BC SPCA Richmond Animal Centre in Richmond, BC

**CLASSIFICATION**: Exempt

**WAGE**: Salary

**About the Position**:
Reporting directly to the Animal Center Manager, this position acts as second in command and assists with meeting the specified goals and expectations for the assigned Animal Center/location. In the absence of the Animal Center Manager, the Assistant Manager supervises staff and volunteers, makes operational decisions, and troubleshoots any issues that may arise.
The Assistant Manager may also participate in planning, implementation, and evaluation of Animal Center activities necessary to deliver on the BC SPCA’s mission, vision, guiding principles, programs and services.

**Duties and Responsibilities**:
**Leadership & Supervision**:

- Assists the Animal Center Manager in supervising staff and volunteers by providing ongoing training, direction, and coaching. This includes, but is not limited to:

- Assisting with onboarding and ongoing training;
- Providing timely feedback;
- Addressing performance concerns;
- Troubleshooting staff and volunteer-related issues;
- Assisting with the completion of annual performance reviews for staff; and
- Recognition.
- Acts as a champion of the BC SPCA Health & Safety program ensuring that safe work practices are implemented and are being carried out to protect staff, volunteers and animals from injury and/or illness.
- Acts as a conduit of information by communicating both internally and externally, as require.
- Relays important information to staff, volunteers, and other key internal stakeholders; receives information from these parties and ensures Animal Center Manager has all required information to sustain day-to-day operations.
- Communicates with external stakeholders to promote humane animal care, address animal welfare issues and promote the activities of the shelter in accordance with BC SPCA’s mission and philosophy.
- Ensures the proper administration of the collective agreement and participates in issue/grievance resolution, as required.
- Assists in overseeing the implementation of high customer service standards and in monitoring overall customer satisfaction in the Animal Center/location through training and coaching.
- Deals with escalated customer service complaints that cannot be resolved directly by the parties involved.
- Models appropriate customer service techniques.
- Participates in volunteer needs assessments and implementation of location volunteer engagement and retention programs/initiatives.
- Administers local Better Impact account and ensures the system is being used effectively to provide the required key performance indicators of volunteer activity.

**Animal Center Operations**:

- Assists the Animal Center Manager in attaining and maintaining optimum welfare standards in the shelter at all times as defined by the ASV guidelines, ShelterSense programs and related BC SPCA policies.
- Assists in meeting length of stay targets through ensuring effective implementation of transfer programs and procedures.
- Assists the Animal Center Manager with administrative functions including inventory, scheduling, payroll and completion of financial paperwork in a timely manner.
- Assists Animal Center Manager in preparing an annual budget and ensures compliance with the approved Animal Center budget on a monthly basis.
- Works collaboratively with cruelty investigations department to ensure appropriate Animal Center response to cruelty investigations.
- Assists with execution of municipal contracts, where applicable.
- This includes understanding applicable bylaws, being able to explain them to internal and external stakeholders, and ultimately ensuring compliance to any municipal contracts.
- Assists in local and provincial fund-raising initiatives including third party events.
- Assists and develops adoption events to promote animals at the BCSPCA and to increase community awareness of adoptable animals.
- Assists with the development and implementation of community outreach activities.
- Represents the BC SPCA at community events when required, seeking advantageous partnerships with community businesses, vendors and individuals.
- Seeks opportunities to promote the BC SPCA at community events in order to strengthen relationships with corporate sponsors and donors.
- Assists in the collaboration efforts with community partners to address animal welfare issues in a community.
