The Strategy, Support and Integrated Initiatives division provides strategic and integrated policy and project services and functions for the ministry. The division’s focus flows from the work of its branches: Strategic Policy and Planning, Justice Supports, Modernization, IMT & Research as well as front line services fo the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Alberta Chief Firearms Office.
The Community Safety Initiates unit provides leadership and oversight of Alberta Justice's community justice programs and transformative initiatives. These programs and initiatives all leverage the community to provide alternative approaches to the traditional justice system to make justice more accessible and offer better outcomes for participants. Additionally, this unit works within the justice system to ensure that stakeholders are aware of the underlying causes of crime, family justice issues, and access to justice in order to enhance their services to reflect the needs of Albertans.
**Role Responsibilities**:
Reporting to the Manager of Community Justice Programs, the Community and Program Liaison is a justice system generalist, versed in all areas of law (Civil, Criminal, and Family), and supports community justice projects that span the entire justice system. These positions develop and administer different community justice programs, and acts as a liaison between these programs, the justice system, and the community. Working with other Community and Program Liaisons and Administrative supports, this position supports the development of new programs and provides operational supports to ensure that these new community programs operate effectively.
The incumbent will be involved in the department’s administration of community justice programs, including specialized courts, restorative justice, youth justice committees, and will act a liaison between government and these community programs. These positions may require to travel throughout the province to facilitate communities conversations around the development of restorative justice and community justice strategies. Additionally, the incumbents will support these initiatives by drafting summary reports on engagement conversations, completing final reports, and writing briefing material to inform the department and government partners.
These positions support other transformative justice initiatives that include mental health, addictions, gender-based violence, youth justice, family justice, anti-racism, poverty, access to justice, and diversity and inclusion. These Community Justice Programs and transformative justice initiatives involve representation from across Justice, Public Safety and Emergency Services, Mental Health and Addiction, Health, Seniors, Community and Social Services, Children and Family Services, Education, Arts, Culture and the Status of Women, Alberta Health Services, Legal Aid Alberta, the Judiciary, local police, and non-profit organizations.
These positions act as a liaison with individuals from across these GOA departments and external stakeholder groups, as it pertains to the creation, operation, and oversight of community justice programs and initiatives. They will be responsible and will directly support the department’s Business Plan, goals in promoting safe community in Alberta and working in partnership with the other partners to support existing and develop new specialized courts and restorative justice initiatives.
