Detailed Overview:
The Youth Peer Coordinator works as a member of a community-based team and utilizes their own consumer knowledge gained from their lived experience of mental illness/substance use in supporting early intervention initiatives, youth involvement in mental health, and youth peer support services, informed by the key principles of cultural safety and humility, trauma-informed care and family/caregiver-centred care. The position will assist with recruitment and coordination of youth peer support services within Child, Youth and Young Adult Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) services; assists with early intervention initiatives, planning, service development, evaluation and quality improvement activities; attends meetings and in-services as required.

**Responsibilities**:

- Working in partnership with other members of Fraser Health Child and Youth/Young Adult Programs/Services and external community partners, develops implements and evaluates strategic plans, goals, objectives, resources and tools to incorporate peer involvement into program and service delivery across the Fraser Health Region.
- Coordinates and provides supervision to Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) Youth Peer Support Workers by recruiting, screening applicants, conducting interviews, providing input into the development of interview questions, making hiring recommendations, orienting new staff,, determining training requirements, scheduling of Youth Peer Support Workers (YPSW) including assignment to specific programs/services, maintaining timekeeping and attendance records, and providing peer-based mentoring, feedback and support while sharing own consumer knowledge and lived experience. Supports development of the Youth Peer Support Worker program by utilizing a lived perspective and encourages skill development to enhance the effectiveness of YPSW and the formation of mutual support networks. Addresses and resolves PSW concerns or escalates as required.
- Provides education to CYYA programs to increase staff understanding of value of peer support and the Youth Peer Support Worker Program.
- Oversees the smooth running of support worker relationships by offering peer-based support, advice and encouragement to YPSW thereby empowering them to make positive differences in the lives of young people.
- Co-facilitates mental health literacy educational presentations as a consumer educator.
- Performs budget duties such as developing budget submissions for grant funding, preparing and presenting budget justifications and presentations such as for peer support worker program needs, coordinating payment for stipends, monitoring expenditures such as for grant dollars or available stipends for impacts on scheduling, following up on anomalies, and taking action to resolve problems.
