Summary
The Unified Lead Hand will guide the farms team ensuring the company’s animal husbandry practices are followed. Responsibilities of a Unified Lead Hand includes feeding and watering birds, monitoring and regulating ventilation and temperature, ensuring water quality and supply, establishing and following feed programs, monitoring feed levels, handling live or deceased birds, and weighing birds. The Unified Lead Hand will maintain accurate daily records of feed and water consumption, mortality rates and other relevant information as well as ensuring clean and well-maintained buildings, equipment, and grounds.
The Unified Lead Hand will lead the barn setup and preparation for new flocks.
Schedule
The work schedule for this position is a rotation that includes weekends, averaging 48 hours per week. The individual must be able to work flexible hours including holidays and to answer on-call alarms.
Position Accountabilities
- Monitor feed levels
- Monitor overall flock health and inform the Veterinarian of concerns when necessary
- Establish and follow various feed programs
- Ensuring water quality and supply are adequate
- Flush drinking lines as required
- Monitor and regulate ventilation and temperature
- Maintain accurate daily records
- Handle live or deceased birds
- Follow a weekly weigh program
- Record data as required
- Daily barn maintenance i.e. cleaning floors, garbage removal, culling as required
- Prepare barns for shipping flocks to the processing plant
- Support scheduling of staff to meet operational needs
- Supervise and direct daily activities of staff under the direction of the Farms Manager
- Report staff concerns and provide performance feedback to the Farms Manager
- Create an environment that is respectful and free from workplace bulling and harassment
- Protect the organization’s value by keeping all protected and proprietary information confidential
- Practice biosecurity protocol
- Follow all safety processes and procedures
- All other duties as assigned
Position Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent preferred.
- Strong commitment to health & safety
- Ability to lift up to 14kgs (30lbs)
- Ability to work with live poultry
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision
- Experience in the livestock industry preferred
- Strong commitment to health & safety
- Pleasant, outgoing personality, with a friendly positive approach to customer service
- Mechanical abilities
- Valid Driver’s license
- Problem solving skills
