The Ontario Regional Blood Coordinating Network (ORBCoN) is a grant funded program through the Ontario Ministry of Health (MOH). A Regional **Lab Manager **is required for this position in a hospital setting in the Department of Medicine.
The **Lab Manager** is responsible for overseeing the technical equipment, resources, and staff. This position provides technical support to staff and students as it pertains to the design and use of research apparatus and lab equipment. They also oversee the training of individuals using the facilities, ensuring all protocols and procedures are adhered to and followed.

**Accountabilities**:
- Facilitate the repair or renewal of equipment and resources and ensure laboratories are set up and functioning at the appropriate times.
- Observe equipment while running to ensure proper and efficient operation.
- Intervene in the operation of equipment when necessary to improve performance, improve experimental results and protect equipment from malfunctions.
- Modify equipment to prevent recurring problems.
- Perform failure analysis of equipment within the facilities.
- Investigate the redesign of laboratories or the space assigned and make recommendations for improvements.
- Produce and analyze data for peer-reviewed journal articles.
- Author scientific papers, funding proposals, and abstracts.
- Write proposals for securing major equipment grants for the lab.
- Implement and maintain budgets. Create financial projections and make adjustments to budgets throughout the fiscal year.
- Estimate time and resources needed to secure quotes and cost estimates for grant proposals.
- Ensure appropriate staffing resources and prioritize and assign work to staff within the department in order to ensure all facets run in an efficient manner and that projects come in on time and on budget.
- Ensure that safety training is provided to students and staff and that all necessary safety protocols are followed.
- Assist students in creating workable designs and teach them how to operate various instruments in order to perform their research.
- Manage infrastructure changes including renovations to the building.
- Assess and implement training requirements for staff.
- Read and understand blueprints of buildings and mechanical components and assemblies for building renovations.
- Write course and presentation material for safety lectures.
- Write proposals for laboratory renewals.
- Present safety lectures and demonstrate equipment use to students, staff, faculty and outside users.
- Present information to committees pertaining to the purchase and acquisition of new materials and equipment for the facility.
- Write standard operating procedures for laboratories and instrument use to ensure compliance with regulations.
- Complete designated substance assessments.
- Complete web searches for components and materials for labs.
- Attend trade shows.
- Train researchers to use experimental equipment, perform experiments for researchers both internal and external to the University.
- Advise individuals on technical and logístical issues.
- Liaise with faculty and others to determine the requirements for research, undergrad or graduate theses, and project work.
- Interact with other departments and faculties when seeking expertise.
- Assess deficiencies and provide solutions to ensure compliance with policies and procedures in the department.
- Negotiate with vendors and suppliers as it pertains to maintenance contracts, and purchasing materials and equipment for the facility.
- Prepare calibration standards for experimental equipment.
**Skills and Qualifications**:
- Master’s degree in Chemistry, or related field.
- Requires 3 years of relevant experience, including 1 year for full supervision.
- Experience with the following is also an asset:
- Experience in a Transfusion Medicine Laboratory preferred
- Certification by the CMLTO as a Medical Laboratory Technologist preferred
