**Job Synopsis**
The Advocacy Intern is part of a team that provides expertise and assistance for MCC Canada’s advocacy efforts. This position is based in the Peace & Justice Office in Ottawa, which serves as a conduit of information and bridge for relationships between the federal government of Canada and MCC Canada’s diverse constituency. It witnesses to government on issues of peace, justice and human dignity that arise out of MCC’s ministry at home and around the world. The Peace &Justice Office works with a number of coalitions while trying to bring a unique, Anabaptist perspective to the work of political engagement.
During this four-month position, the intern helps to support advocacy, through various tasks such as monitoring and conducting background research on Canadian federal government policy issues, developing communication pieces, and supporting special projects, as identified by their supervisor. The intern will also share in routine office administrative responsibilities and provide logístical support for a variety of office projects, including significant support for MCC supporter learning events.
This position is primarily supervised by one Peace & Justice Office staff person but requires close and ongoing collaboration with other members of the Peace & Justice Office team. This internship is available on a living wage basis from 18.75 hours up to 37.5 hours per week. Due to the short-term nature of this position, relocation policies and benefit package do not apply.
This position requires the incumbent to live out and embrace the Christian faith foundation of MCC; ensuring the Christian ethos and Principles and Practices of MCC permeate their work and relationships. The incumbent will live out their faith by serving others and advancing the mission of MCC as they relate to staff, constituents, donors, and others.

**Qualifications**
**Essential**
**Education**:
- Enrolled in, or recently completed, a university program in a related field (e.g., political science, international development, history, etc.).
**Skills**:
- Research - comfortable engaging new issues and fields of study
- Communication - able to convey complex information in writing and orally for a wide range of audiences, conversant with new media technologies
- Relational - a team player who can engage people from diverse backgrounds and viewpoints with sensitivity and tact
- Creative - self-motivated and willing to take initiative in implementing ideas
Knowledge:
- Canadian government policy and process
- Social justice issues related to the priorities of MCC
- Successful police record check.
**Preferred**
- Fluency in French is an asset.
**Key Responsibilities**
**Complexity/Competencies**:
During this four-month position, the intern helps monitor and conduct background research on Canadian federal government policy issues, as identified by their supervisor. The intern will also share in routine office administrative responsibilities and provide logístical support for a variety of office projects, including significant support for learning activities for MCC supporters.
**Independent Action**:
After the supervisor has outlined key research priorities for the internship the intern should be able to take initiative and work independently, with supervision meetings several times a month.
**Initiative and Ingenuity**:
The intern will take initiative to help shape the direction of the internship. This includes developing personal learning objectives for the course of the internship, based on established P&J research priorities.
**Communication/Interpersonal Skills**:
Ability to write various kinds of communication on a regular basis for internal MCC staff and external MCC supporters.
**Mental/Physical/Visual Demand**:
This position requires desk work, including screen time. Some of the work involves hearing stories and reading reports that deal with global injustice, conflict and violence.
