Membership and Communications Coordinator

The University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA) is the Association representing all fulltime and part-time faculty members and academic librarians at the University of Toronto. It is seeking to fill a full-time Membership and Communications Coordinator position in an active Association office located near the University of Toronto downtown campus.
The Membership and Communications Coordinator is ultimately responsible to the UTFA President and will work under the day-to-day direction of the UTFA Executive Director or designate.
**Position Summary**
The Membership and Communications Coordinator is responsible for assisting UTFA in the development and implementation of UTFA’s communication plan and strategies, including internal and external communications that are in alignment with UTFA’s mission, vision, values and strategic directions. The primary role is member engagement through effective communication and union organizing.
The Membership and Communications Coordinator facilitates membership engagement with and participation in UTFA through campaigns and educational initiatives; assists political leadership with researching and developing member engagement and capacity-building strategies; and works with political leadership and other communities to identify issues, plan and implement broader-based advocacy campaigns.
**Qualifications and Skills**
- A demonstrated understanding of member engagement, the development and strengthening of communication plans and strategies, and campaign development tools, strategies and processes;
- A demonstrated capacity to plan and implement effective and successful communication campaigns, to establish and deliver on short and long-term engagement strategies and capacity-building goals;
- A general understanding of terms and conditions of faculty employment, collective bargaining processes, and Ontario post-secondary issues;
- The ability to take initiative, be self-directed and creative in developing communication and member engagement campaigns;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, written and oral communication skills, and meeting facilitation skills;
- The ability to work on projects individually and in collaboration with other staff members and political leadership independent of supervision.
- The appropriate level of computer and technological literacy, particularly in Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and platforms to advance and track campaign work, mobilization and member engagement.
- An understanding of AODA and other accessibility considerations for both web and print communications.
- Strong research skills, including the demonstrated ability to search for, find, collect, organize, analyze, interpret and evaluate information.
**Duties**
- assist UTFA in developing targeted internal communications strategies to convey key messages, association positioning and objectives to address specific communication needs and issues aimed at members, including communication plans and platforms that are in compliance with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act;
- assist UTFA in developing a member engagement program, including providing support to UTFA Council members in developing member engagement, including the development, implementation and strengthening of communication and outreach initiatives for their constituents;
- assist UTFA in developing an educational program to identify member goals, issues and priorities with the goal of raising awareness and developing capacity;
- develop relevant and appropriate materials to raise member and community awareness and develop capacity:
- support UTFA political leaders who are working with the University of Toronto community, the broader labour movement, and the concerned public, to develop successful advocacy campaigns on shared U of T issues, labour or post-secondary education issues and social issues of concern to the UTFA membership;
- develop effective materials including pamphlets, letters, e-blasts, graphics, surveys, social media communications and other forms of communication and engagement for use in the advocacy campaigns;
- support the development of tools and strategies to: a) identify member concerns and priorities for improvement to terms and conditions of employment; b) communicate those concerns to the employer, the campus community and the broader community, and c) create opportunities for members to demonstrate support of UTFA’s bargaining goals;
- provide research pertaining to government policies and changing norms in higher education in support of collective bargaining proposals; and
- complete other related duties as assigned.
This position falls within the CUPE 1281 bargaining unit. The salary range for this position is $99,636.26 to $134,057.16.
