Temporary Position

**Position Summary**:
The Educational Assistant is assigned to assist teachers in a class or classrooms where a special need has been identified. The primary focus of the Educational Assistant’s responsibility is to interact with the students and to support their learning. Educational Assistants do not independently plan, modify, evaluate lessons, or report on the progress of the students. The Educational Assistant will be expected to perform the following functions under the direction of the teacher and the supervision of the Principal.

**Major Responsibilities**:
To work with the staff in providing guidance, emotional support and encouragement to all students, in accordance with the Board’s philosophy on mainstreaming

To provide opportunities for success in fostering self esteem, promoting positive peer and adult interaction and social skills.

To implement modified programs to allow students to develop meaningful academic and social skills within the school and the community.

To carry out specific programs in language, behaviour management and physical management as established by the teacher and/or specialist

To prepare materials in preparation for programs as required by the teachers.

To assist the student(s) in the provision of personal and medical care, examples: dressing, toileting, hygiene, and lifting.

To assist a teacher in supervision students during classroom activities, yard duty, lunch and bus arrivals and departures.

To accompany and support students in the community during work placements and excursions.

To attend appropriate meetings as requested by the Principal.

To carry out other related duties as assigned by the Principal.

**Requirements**:
Training and experience working with children and young adults who have special needs

Good communication skills

Should be versatile and a team player

Training in First Aid, and in Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention is a definite asset

Physically able to perform the duties of an Educational Assistant

The above position is posted in accordance with CUPE 2331 Collective Agreement Article 12.01. The salary will be as per placement on the Salary Grid of the current CUPE 2331 Collective Agreement.
