**Position Description**:
The Human Rights Advisor is responsible for the implementation of the College’s Human Rights Discrimination and Harassment Policy and inter-connected policies such as the Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence Policy, Freedom of Expression Policy, and other conduct and equity related policies to ensure adherence to the Ontario Human Rights Code. The incumbent is responsible for performing intake, case management and resolution of Human Rights complaints, as well as developing and delivering education, training and outreach across the college community related to the George Brown College Human Rights Discrimination & Harassment Policy and inter-connected policies.
The complaint resolution, prevention and education activities require an intersectional and trauma informed approach taking into consideration the College’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation commission’s recommendations and its commitment to embedding anti-racism and equity-minded principles and practices in processes, procedures, and complaint resolution outcomes.
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Conducts intake sessions and communicates in a timely way with individuals wishing to consult, obtain information and/or advice, disclose concerns, and/or file a formal complaint under the Human Rights Discrimination and Harassment Policy and/or other relevant policies.
- Conducts preliminary assessments to determine jurisdiction as well as the most appropriate method to address the complaint (i.e. early resolution, alternative dispute resolution, mediation, investigation).
- Maintains a caseload of complaints, collecting information, reviewing files, and gathering necessary information to identify issues relevant to human rights complaints.
- Facilitates resolution through mediated conversation or other methods of resolution (e.g. restorative justice).
- Understands and incorporates procedural fairness principles and practices throughout the life cycle of the complaint resolution process.
- Follows internal protocols for data collection, case management, information retrieval, and reporting as required.
- Collaborates closely with other Advisors and members of the OARHERS team to respond to and address concerns and complaints as well as engage in preventive and proactive initiatives.
- Understands diverse needs of relevant College stakeholder groups, responds in a trauma-informed and racially/culturally sensitive manner and ensures all parties to a complaint have access to external and/or internal resources for support.
- Responsible for understanding and interpreting all policies governing the complaint resolution work and incident management at the College, including but not limited to, Freedom of Information, Workplace Violence and Harassment; Accessibility AODA Policy, and all College Code of Conduct Policies.
- Conducts research, environmental scans and collects promising practices in creating and developing educational, presentation, promotional material on diversity issues, campaigns and special initiatives that are aligned with the college’s strategic direction and global diversity issues.
- Develops and delivers regular education and training sessions on a variety of topics including but not limited to human rights, discrimination and harassment, positive space, sexual violence, anti-racism, equity, and diversity to student and employee audiences.
- Works collaboratively with multiple College stakeholder groups and service areas to support complaint resolution activities and the development of education activities and programming for all community members.
- Work with Student Associations, Faculty & Staff groups on collaborative education and training projects with consistent messaging from cross-sector stakeholders and best practices in the field.
- Provide collaborative knowledge and recommendations for College committees around inclusive practices as a representative of OAREHRS and as requested by the manager/Director.
- Other related duties as assigned.
**Educational and Experience Requirements**:
- Minimum Master’s degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in relevant field (Law, Social Science, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience).
