Reporting to the Supervisor of Sportsfields and Turf Operations the Lead Hand, will co-ordinate and lead the turf maintenance staff and provide direction and guidance to full-time, seasonal and student employees. Duties include but are not limited to providing hands-on leadership and instruction to the turf maintenance team, maintaining accurate records as required and preparing and following maintenance and inspection programs for parks and open space properties, facilities and equipment. The Lead Hand will also be responsible for diagnosing and prescribing/implementing IPM responses to invasive species on city property. The Lead Hand will foster a positive and innovative work environment and ensure that safe working conditions and practices are implemented. Hours of work vary and may include weekends and evenings. Lead Hands may also be asked to work unscheduled hours as necessary.

**QUALIFICATIONS**
- Graduation from a post-secondary institution with a focus on turf or horticulture
- Valid Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks - Landscape and Industrial Vegetation Exterminators License
- Valid IPM Accreditation
- Working knowledge of turf diseases, pests and invasive species and common treatments
- Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in maintenance of related equipment as well as a general understanding of Irrigation systems and fertilization programs including cultural practices common in the turf industry
- Demonstrated effective communication, both oral and written, customer service and problem solving skills. Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties.
- Must possess an understanding of the Ministry of Transportation Book 7 and Book 18, WHMIS, the Pesticide Act and working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and will ensure that all work is undertaken safely in accordance with all policies, procedures and regulations
- Certifications in chainsaw, chipping and load securement would be considered an asset
- Current Certification in Standard First Aid and level C CPR
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License

**WAGE/SALARY RANGE**: $26.06 to $32.57 per hour (40 hours per week) plus benefits.
