Overview
The Abbotsford Yard Operator will report to the Abbotsford Yard Manager. The Yard Operator will mainly operate a loader to prepare vehicles for the recycling process. This operator will also operate or assist in operating End-of-Life Vehicle de-pollution machinery, a car crusher, and weigh trucks delivering scrap vehicles. They will also print supplier’s scale tickets, provide excellent customer service, and maintain relationships with trucking company contacts.
Job Responsibilities
Inventory Management
- Scale vehicle weight in SAI or create manual ticket
- Record VIN#, Year, Make, Model, Vendor of vehicles
- Identify and mark vehicles with spray paint according to vendor
- Report inventory information to Yard Manager
- Inspect vehicle for catalytic converters
- Keep vehicles in drop off area organized and stored in a space efficient manner
- Keep processed vehicle storage area in an organized and space efficient manner
- Processed vehicles are stacked safely
- Cars are stacked and stored in the appropriate area
- Car stacks are no more than 2 cars high
- Car stack is balanced
- Responsible for checking that the spill kit is up to date and stocked, and notifying the Yard Manager if there are items missing/needed.

Processing & Loading
- Inspect vehicles for hazardous materials & reject as per RSR scrap acceptance policy
- Inspection includes inside of the vehicle & inside of trunk & underneath car hood
- Remove car battery of vehicle
- Remove mercury switches inside of vehicle
- Safely handle and store batteries on site
- Safely handle and store mercury switches on site
- Perform equipment Pre-trip inspection at the start of every shift
- Notify yard manager when mobile equipment needs refueling
- Grease and perform minor equipment maintenance as needed
- Flatten vehicles with mobile equipment without creating a spill
- Deflate vehicle tires
- Stack & Store processed vehicles safely
- No more than 2 cars high
- Cars balanced and will not fall over
- Plan out loading configuration to safely maximize payload
- Safely Load flattened vehicles onto flatdeck trucks
- Car stacks are balanced
- Car stacks are within legal height limits
- Car stacks are placed within the width of the trailer
- Safely Load flattened vehicles onto dropped off flatdeck trailers
- Jack stands are placed underneath trailer
- Car stacks are balanced
- Car stacks are within legal height limits
- Car stacks are placed within the width of the trailer
- Assist truck drivers with strapping loads
- Clean up debris from flattened vehicles

Safety Expectations
- Trained in all RSR standards
- Wear PPE at all times
- Seatbelt worn at all times when operating mobile equipment
- Work area isolated from driveway and pedestrians when mobile equipment in operation
- Cones, physical barriers, tape, chain
- Be aware of truck drivers and any other pedestrians in the working area at all times
- Direct truck drivers in a safe manner during loading operation
- Keep site visitors away from dangerous areas
- Follow traffic management plan at all times
- Follow working alone procedure when necessary

Environmental Expectations
- Yard kept in a tidy and organized manner at all times
- Batteries stored safely and away from the elements at all times
- Contain spills immediately
- Document & Report spills to yard manager immediately

Productivity Targets & Expectations
- Arrive on time at the start of every shift
- Responsible for keeping the yard clean, any Idle time should be spent picking up debris and keeping the yard orderly

First 6 months
- 18 cars processed per day
- 18 cars shipped on 2 truck loads per day
- Average 9 vehicles per truck load
- 1 hour loading time per truck, includes netting time

End of 1 Year
- 27 cars processed per day
- 27 cars shipped on 3 truck loads per day

**Qualifications**:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- Must have scrap metal recycling industry experience.
- Experienced front end loader operator (3+ years) in a metal recycling/auto wrecking yard environment (able to confidently maneuver in tight spaces and on uneven ground).
- Experience operating or feeding a car crusher.
- High school diploma / GED.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to write simple correspondence.
