Mentoring is a learning relationship, focused on long-term development. The primary purpose is to drive personal growth; build skills, knowledge and understanding.
Collaboratively and in partnership with key community organizations, this position is responsible to develop and facilitate in-person programs for marginalized youth, youth facing multiple barriers and youth in challenging context (e.g. youth disengaged from school/family/community, newcomer youth, mental health barriers, low academic achievement/disengagement, youth involved with law enforcement, etc.)
30 hours per week
Due to the nature of the Youth Mentorship Program, scheduling of hours will be determined by the program needs and can and will fluctuate (week days, week nights, weekends)
The position must work flexible, rotational hours, be responsive, accessible and exhibit sound judgement.
- Staff cannot always be confined rigidly to a definite schedule of hours - 'flex' time WILL be required_
**Education**:
Child & Youth Worker diploma or Social Service Worker diploma or equivalent in education and experience
Qualifications:
Current First Aid/CPR; HIGH FIVE PHCD, WHMIS, Safe Food Handling Certificate and additional BGCB training as required
Clean Driver’s Abstract
Access to a reliable vehicle
Experience and Skill Set:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with a variety of marginalized children and youth, children and youth facing multiple barriers and/or children and youth in challenging context age categories (6-25 years)
- Minimum of 2 year’s experience working in the mental health & wellness sector
- Minimum of 2 year’s experience working with children and youth in crisis
- Previous outreach and community development experience
- In-depth knowledge of and be able to implement strength-based and evidence-based practices
- Ability to interpret and comply with the policies and procedures of the Club
- Demonstrated knowledge of processes and previous experience in developing effective working relationships within a variety of organizations
- Strong interpersonal skills and capacity to relate to children and youth
- Good presentation skills
- Demonstrates initiative
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Previous experience in program development and facilitation
Complexity of Duties
Ensure all programs operate in compliance with Club values, policies & best practices, and funding requirements
Demonstrated understanding or systems theory as applied to family, school and community
Effectively manage multiple demands and priorities
Readily and sensitively manages any conflicts/issues
Manages the effective resolution of service delivery issues
Creative & alternative thinking to develop new ideas and approaches
Creative & alternative thinking to resolve work-related issues
Collect information and completes reports in accordance with Club and Ministry guidelines
Ability to work well in a team environment but also able to work independently
Actively engage in program implementation
Work in collaboration with internal and external partners to build and maintain professional partnerships
Maintain open communication with program partners regarding their youth needs, youth's participation, behaviours and/or any incidents
Provides coaching and information about community resources
Acts as both an advocate and liaison for youth with community agencies, schools, Law enforcement and other local service providers
This position has no financial responsibilities
Physical Demands
Lifting on heavy items such as tables, chairs, equipment, transporting supplies between sites etc. does require the individual in this position to be in good physical condition and be aware of proper lifting techniques etc., to ensure personal safety.
Working Conditions
Position ‘home base’ is located in a climate controlled facility, however the majority of programs extend into the community and/or outdoor space may be utilized
Manual dexterity will be required to use a computer
Offsite program locations will vary in size, demographics, temperature, accessibility, etc..
The working environment can be extremely loud at times
Incumbent will interact with youth, staff and community partners under all kinds of circumstances, many of which may be traumatic
The environment is fast paced and demanding - position is required to be extremely resourceful, ‘think quick on their feet’, manage multiply tasks and issues, able to prioritize and resolve issues effectively, thoroughly and effectively.
Responsible for the direct supervision of children & youth - position may be responsible for the supervision of post-secondary placement student(s)
