Position Description:
The Nature Kindergarten Program is modeled on forest school programs in Northern Europe, Australia, and New Zealand with a significant focus on environmental stewardship, the environment as a co-teacher, engagement with the First Peoples Principles of Learning, the involvement of other educational partners, and daily interaction with the outdoor natural environment regardless of the weather. As with all provincial Kindergarten programs, Nature Kindergarten is based on the BC Ministry of Education curriculum. Every morning, the program will take place away from the school grounds, and the teacher will need to problem solve and address unforeseen circumstances while outdoors. The teacher will be outdoors during all types of weather (e.g. sun, wind, rain, sleet, snow, etc.), and will be required to walk at least 2 km, with students and supplies, every day. The Kindergarten teacher will work collaboratively with an Early Childhood Educator (ECE), a program development and design team, parents, community partners, and academic researchers.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Minimum one year of experience within the last five years working in Kindergarten and/or Grade 1
- Elementary qualified with specialty training in early learning such as Early Childhood Education (ECE), Kindergarten Specialist or equivalent post
- secondary coursework
- Current Wilderness First Aid training and certification, and experience mitigating risks for young children in an outdoor environment
- Certification and/or training in outdoor education with young children
- Strong understanding of the First Peoples Principles of Learning and experience incorporating traditional and local Knowledge of land-based learning
- Previous experience in Nature Kindergarten or Nature Preschool programs
