For over 100 years, Fort Garry Fire Trucks (FGFT) has been engineering equipment for the most extreme conditions in the world, building fire trucks, custom-built pumpers, aerial ladders, water delivery tankers and related fire-fighting equipment. Holding multiple certifications to ensure the entire FGFT team meets and exceeds customer expectations, they are on the leading edge of manufacturing in both technique and design. Reporting to the President, the Operations Manager is responsible for leading and directing the planning, engineering, and purchasing departments as well as the manufacturing facility. The Operations Manager will identify and implement strategies for efficiencies, quality controls, and materials and inventory management, and ensure operational activities are on time and on budget, and will plan, organize, and control the manufacturing operation.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Lead and direct the manufacturing operations of the production facility including the planning, engineering, and purchasing departments.
- Increase the productivity and efficiency of manufacturing processes, ensuring compliance with established certifications.
- Identify and lead the implementation of process improvements related to materials, labour, and equipment to ensure FGFT meets production targets.
- Maintain a schedule and proactively identify changes to machinery and equipment, production systems, and methods of work.
- Direct quality control inspection systems and maintain production reporting procedures.
- Monitor staffing requirements and hire new employees as needed to match production requirements.
- Collaborate with department leads to identify opportunities to improve employee satisfaction and reduce turnover.
- Manage data collection and metrics to ensure FGFT achieves productivity targets, reducing cost per unit and eliminating errors as necessary to continue delivering superior customer service.
- Ensure all safety policies are complied with and proactively identify related training needs.
- Oversee materials and inventory.
- Conduct budget reviews and report cost plans to executive management.
- Ensure that operational activities remain on time and within budget.
**EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS**
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field. A Masters in Business Administration would be an asset.
- Minimum ten years of manufacturing experience; experience in a customized or custom manufacturing environment would be an asset.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and manage an operations team.
- Strong IT skills, including an understanding and familiarity with MRP/ERP software.
- Familiarity with LEAN and custom manufacturing methods.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Outstanding judgement and leadership skills.
- The ability to delegate responsibilities while maintaining organizational control of operations and customer service.
