Summerhill Market is seeking a highly motivated and hands-on **Fresh Department Team Lead** to oversee operations across our fresh food departments at our Annex location. This role is ideal for someone passionate about food, team leadership, and creating exceptional customer experiences.
Our Fresh Department includes a diverse range of high-quality products—from gourmet ready-to-eat meals crafted at our **Commissary Kitchen**, to specialty meats, seafood, artisan cheeses, and deli selections. The Fresh Department Team Lead ensures that all products are received, rotated, merchandised, and sold to the highest standard.
This leadership role combines operational excellence with a focus on people, requiring someone who can **drive results**, **support and develop team members**, and maintain a **customer
- and safety-first mindset** at all times.
**Key Responsibilities**
- Act as the on-the-floor leader across **Prepared Foods, Deli, Cheese, Meat, Seafood**, and assist **Bakery** as needed
- Liaise daily with the **Commissary Kitchen** to manage and monitor inventory, deliveries, and product quality
- Ensure **timely receiving and accurate merchandising** of all fresh products, with attention to best-before dates and food safety standards
- Maintain full, fresh, and well-organized displays that meet brand and operational standards
- Drive sales by delivering excellent service, offering product knowledge, and leading customer engagement initiatives (e.g., food sampling)
- Reduce waste and shrink by monitoring product movement, adjusting orders, and managing back stock
- Build weekly schedules and ensure appropriate shift coverage to meet business needs
- **Train, mentor, and develop staff** in all areas of department operations and service standards
- Conduct regular **performance check-ins**, provide coaching and feedback, and escalate issues when necessary
- Uphold and enforce all **food safety protocols**, including OHSA and company compliance standards
- Work collaboratively with the Prepared Foods Manager to implement improvements and support seasonal planning and innovation
**Job Requirements**
- 3+ years of experience in grocery, food service, or kitchen leadership (Prepared Foods, Deli, or similar environment preferred)
- Demonstrated ability to **lead and motivate a team** in a fast-paced retail or food production environment
- Strong organizational skills with an ability to manage competing priorities and time-sensitive tasks
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills; able to give direction and build rapport across departments
- Food Handler’s Certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Comfort using or learning inventory/order systems, scheduling tools, and other in-store technology
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and work in refrigerated/cooler environments
- Flexible availability to work days, evenings, weekends, and cover shifts on short notice
- High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education in a related field is an asset
