**Safety Officer**
Prairie Bus Lines is seeking a Safety Officer to support it's Red Deer location. As a Safety Officer, you’ll respond to and investigate safety hazards, near misses and incidents and, most importantly, drive the development and implementation of people and operational safety programs that push the organization toward a safety culture and performance excellence.
This role requires you to work in a fast-paced environment, work independently as a self-starter, effectively prioritize your work, demonstrate a high level of attention to detail and bring your safety leadership skills to work every day.
**Responsibilities**:
- Developing and implementing proactive local safety programs, policies, safe work procedures and initiatives that improve local safety performance and compliance with both internal and external occupational health and safety and transportation safety requirements
- Being present in the operation to build relationships with frontline employees, lead small group safety meetings (toolbox talks), support training drills, identify hazards and foster the local safety culture
- Conducting investigations of reported hazards, near misses and incidents
- Managing collision files in collaboration with the company’s adjustors and insurers
- Responding on-scene to significant collisions and other safety incidents
- Developing and presenting material at employee safety meetings
- Leading the preparation for the annual certificate of recognition (COR) and transportation safety audits
- Supporting the local joint occupational health and safety committee meetings, inspections and other activities
- Reporting and managing workplace injury claims and cases
- Ongoing monitoring of operations to ensure compliance with internal and external requirements
- Maintaining current and accurate safety records
- Performing other duties as assigned that support local compliance and safety excellence
**Knowledge and Skills**:
- Three years in health and safety or transportation safety roles
- Experience in school bus operations (preferred) or other experience in the transportation industry
- Hands-on experience with tactical safety activities, such as incident investigations, hazard assessments, workplace inspections, joint occupational health and safety committee leadership, ergonomic assessments, etc.
- Experience with the certificate of recognition (COR) program and transportation/national safety code audits and compliance
- A class 5 driver’s license with a clean abstract and a willingness to upgrade to a class 2QS (note, a class 2 license is considered an asset)
- A proven ability to establish rapport with a diverse frontline workforce coupled with excellent communication and presentation skills
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite office and the aptitude to quickly learn other products used by the company
- An occupational health and safety certificate or diploma (desired). A safety designation or certification is considered an asset - e.g., CRSP, CRST, CTSP, NCSO, CHSC, etc.
- Experience with workers’ compensation claims management and return-to-work planning
**Working Conditions**:
The office is located in Red Deer, AB. Typical office hours are from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Prairie Bus Lines is an operational organization that moves people from early morning to late evening, seven days a week. As such, you will be expected to flex hours outside of the traditional business day as required and may periodically travel to other locations as needed. Holidays are taken around the needs of the company and during blackout periods.
