The Department of Athletics & Recreation provides students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the greater community with the opportunity to pursue athletic excellence and recreational activities. The mission of Athletics & Recreation is to cultivate human potential and well-being through recreation and sport. The operating units of the department include interuniversity athletics, recreation, and sport medicine.
In addition to head coaching duties, the Head Volleyball Coach is responsible for:
- Student-Athlete development
- Management and administration of the volleyball program
- Technical preparation and implementation of team tactics and strategies
- Recruitment of highly motivated scholar athletes
- Training and supervision of assistant coach(es)
- Health and safety of all participants
The Volleyball Head Coach is also responsible for the strategic oversight and development of ancillary operations for the program including:
- Alumni relations and development initiatives
- Running high-performance camps and clinics
- Running high school and club tournaments
- Coordinating partnerships with external clubs (amateur and professional)
- Building relationships with provincial and national sport organizations
- Student-Athlete Development & Recruitment_
- Support the development of the student-athlete throughout their academic and athletic career; in support of the strategic vision of Athletics & Recreation and the University, while ensuring a “student-centered” program
- Provide leadership through the operating of a volleyball program that educates and enforces the importance of a fair and equitable approach to sport, teamwork, etc.
- Serve as a role model for student-athletes, and the community through the demonstration of sporting ethics, principles of fair play and respect for officials, opponents, and the sport
- Provide leadership in developing a strategic recruitment strategy that will drive highly motivated, talented student-athletes to McMaster University and to the volleyball programs
- Coaching _
- Set annual program objectives that motivates student-athletes to strive for their greatest potential both athletically and academically
- Develop tools to achieve the program objectives:
- Annual year-long training plan for the team and individual athletes
- Systems and style-of-play that best fit the skills of the student-athletes
- Review and study opposing teams through scouting reports and video analysis
- Game strategies and tactics for each competition
- Regular evaluation of progress through the review of statistics and other feedback
- Coordinate the responsibilities of coaching staff
- Coach and supervise at competitions
- Complete an annual review of team performance and overall technical assessment
- Prioritize, supervise, and monitor a strength and conditioning program for student-athletes in collaboration with McMaster’s Strength & Conditioning team
- Management & Administration_
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise the program’s training and practice schedule
- Manage the program’s budgetary costs and achieve financial targets for revenue generation
- Work closely with the Competitive Sports Manager and the Associate Director, High Performance to create the program’s annual competitive schedule
- Liaise with local, provincial, and national sport agencies
- Working with the Competitive Sports Manager and Varsity Coordinator to develop the program’s travel schedule in accordance with the Varsity Travel Policy
- Support confirmation of student-athletes meeting OUA and U SPORTS eligibility requirements
- Public & Alumni Relations and Fundraising_
- Provide leadership consistent with McMaster University principles and strategic planning in developing support systems for alumni and community initiatives
- Work with the Advancement Team to engage and foster relationships with alumni and the sport community
- Responsible for fundraising as a means of bridging the difference between revenues and costs
- Program Operations_
- Plan and oversee McMaster volleyball summer camps/clinics
- Develop the budget, curriculum, and training schedule
- Work with staff to develop registration timelines and process
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise the camp staff
- Ensure the camps adhere to the safety and security standards of McMaster University
- Develop other team specific revenue generating initiatives such as high school and club tournaments
- Develop relationships with external (amateur and professional) clubs. Pursue partnerships to develop the overall brand.
- Equity, Diversity & Inclusion_
- Work with department staff on plans for increasing recruitment of Black, Indigenous, and racialized student-athletes
- Provides strong leadership in promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in all programming
**Qualifications**:
- Bachelor's degree
- Appropriate NCCP, or sport
