The Safety Coordinator works collaboratively with the Safety Team to implement the health and safety management system for Victoria Shipyards Co. Ltd. This person must initiate and monitor safety initiatives, develop and implement policy and procedures and coordinate training. The Safety Coordinator may work collaboratively with the VSL Ability Management team and the Seaspan Labour Relations Specialist. This position reports directly to the Senior Coordinator, Safety with indirect reporting to the Senior Manager, Safety and/or the Safety Supervisor.

**Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site**based at 825 Admirals Road, Victoria.**

**What you'll do**
- Collaboratively manage Safety of workers in Submarine program, Ship repair and dockyard naval ship repair with a work force size that varies from approximately 600-1,000 employees, which may include developing, control, and use of safety procedures. In addition, work with Management, Supervisor, Joint Committees, Employees and Regulating Bodies to implement the policies and procedures of the Company.
- Enforce and Educate employees on the following regulations: WorkSafeBC, Canada Labour Code, Canadian Coast Guard Regulations, as well as OSHA, NIOSH and ACGIH regulations.
- Cooperate in the auditing of the health & safety system and assist Supervisors in the investigation of accidents and near misses.
- May instruct Supervisors and Subcontractors on various industrial hygiene issues, including the safe work practices. Write and file ‘Notice of Projects” (NOP) with the proper authorities or regulatory agencies when required.
- Attend all emergencies and help direct the workforce away from danger and help emergency personnel in their duties. Coordinate the site emergency response team and liaise with local emergency response agencies.
- Test the air quality of confined spaces and issue the confined space permits or direct a competent person to do so, when required. When requested, inspect the work area with the supervisor and issue _hot works _permits or direct a competent person to do so.
- Actively seek solutions to workers’ genuine Health and Safety concerns. When a Safety Coordinator becomes aware of anyone performing an unsafe act, they must first approach the person and instruct the employee of the nature of the unsafe act. If there is an unsatisfactory outcome, the Safety Coordinator will inform the person's immediate Supervisor.
- Identify and correct situations that are immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH). Conduct testing and sampling in various areas for Health, Safety and Environmental concerns
- Selection and training in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including fit testing of respirators for workers
- Organize and present competent health and safety training. Training will be either in-house or third party. Maintain all training records on file for internal and due diligence purposes

**What you'll bring**
- Post-secondary diploma or certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent education. For example, BCIT OHS certificate program.
- Minimum 3-5 years related experience in a Sarefty role, preferably in ship repair or heavy industrial setting.
- Advanced Occupational First Aid Certificate and AED Certificate.
- Hold or be in the process of obtaining a CRST or CRSP designation.
- Strong leadership ability, rational judgement skills, excellent communication, organizational skills, and decision-making capabilities.
- Computer literate with basic knowledge of Microsoft Office/Windows environment.
- Strong leadership ability and rational judgement skills with the ability to build relationships, trust and influence personnel at all levels.
