**ABOUT THIS POSITION**:The Alberta Society of Artists is seeking a passionate and highly organized individual to manage and curate Region 3 of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX). This is a unique opportunity to lead a vital program that increases access to visual arts across Alberta’s diverse communities-especially rural, remote, and underserved areas.
This role combines curation, community engagement, arts administration, logistics, and outreach. You will develop exhibitions, manage touring schedules, coordinate with artists and venues, and oversee all aspects of delivery and reporting in collaboration with the host organization - Alberta Society of Artists, and the program funder - Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
**KEY RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Curate and develop three new exhibitions per year, including:
- One based solely on the Alberta Foundation for the Art’s provincial art collection
- One focused on EDIA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility)
- Coordinate the circulation of at least six exhibitions annually - rotating to new venues monthly. Exhibitions include those traded with other Alberta TREX regions coordinated by partner organizations.
- Manage all logistics, shipping, installation support (offering directions and art handling advice to venues), and crate handling
- Ensure fair and equitable booking access to venues
- Develop or subcontract the development of educational and interpretive materials aligned with Alberta’s K-12 curriculum
- Coordinate visiting artist programs, following CARFAC fee schedules for presentations
- Hire and manage contract staff/subcontractors as needed
- Track and manage program budgets, reporting, and deliverables
- Collaborate with ASA’s bookkeeper and board to prepare financial reports
- Promote the TREX program through public engagement, storytelling, digital materials, and outreach campaigns
- Maintain a dedicated TREX Region 3 website and contribute to AFA’s marketing initiatives
- Support and train host venues, including a minimum of five onsite visits per year
- Report to AFA with detailed annual and interim reports, surveys, and program statistics
**QUALIFICATIONS**:
- Demonstrated experience in curatorial work, exhibition production, and/or visual arts programming (at least four years)
- Demonstrated experience in art handling, art collections care, and a general knowledge of industry standards in artwork condition reporting
- Demonstrated experience in project and budget management/reporting
- Strong project and time management skills with the ability to meet multiple and fast-paced deadlines
- Experience with arts administration, community engagement, and budget management
- Knowledge of the Alberta arts ecosystem and rural outreach considered an asset
- Knowledge of EDIA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility) and how to implement it in operational workflows considered a strong asset
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a small team
- Ability to work independently and stay on timeline without direct supervision
- Strong writing skills for developing curatorial statements, reports, and press materials
- Strong skills in overseeing marketing and promotional planning
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout Region 3 of Alberta a strong asset
**IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE**
You’re a thoughtful and self-directed arts professional with a strong sense of initiative and care for community access to the arts. You bring a balance of creative vision and organizational skill, and you’re comfortable wearing many hats—curator, project manager, communicator, and occasional crate-hauler/fixer-upper.
You don’t need to have all the answers on day one—but you’re someone who is resourceful, curious, and able to chart a path forward when there’s no clear roadmap. You’re energized by the opportunity to problem-solve independently, adapt to changing needs, and find solutions in collaboration with artists, venues, and program partners.
You’re passionate about visual art and equity in the arts, and you want to help bring meaningful cultural experiences to communities across Alberta.
