Collections Assistant

The Strathcona County Heritage Foundation’s (SCHF) mission is to collect, preserve, promote and display the history and heritage of Strathcona County through the operation of the Strathcona County Museum & Archives (Strathma).
**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- _Accessioning _- assigning chronological numbers to each incoming artifact according to the system already in place, and recording basic data on the artifacts
- _Cataloguing_ - using appropriate museum terminology to complete condition reports on all incoming artifacts; including photographs of the objects; learn and use appropriate cultural terminology/language for items in preference to the academic nomenclature; involves researching provenance and history
- _Organizing_ - the professional care, handling, and storage of collections items while maintaining accurate and detailed location information;
- _Other_ - administrative, operational and light janitorial duties as required
**Qualifications/Skills**:
- Research skills - computer and archival resources
- Comfortable interacting with visitors of various age
- Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently on museum projects, showing personal initiative in all work environments
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Lifting and carrying items/supplies related to collections, programming, and events
- Accessioning, deaccessioning, and proper handling of artifacts is an asset
- Experience with cataloguing software is an asset
A student may be eligible for employment if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number);
- are between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and
- are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.
