The Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society (VAFCS) is a non-profit charitable organization serving the Urban Aboriginal community with a mandate to provide programs and services that will contribute to the cultural, educational, social, economic, and recreational development of Urban Aboriginal people. The Society manages twenty-three programs and services through three locations in Vancouver. The Friendship Centre at 1607 East Hastings is a community-led organization creating meaningful change for the Urban Aboriginal Population that we serve. VAFCS is currently seeking an individual connected with Indigenous community, highly organized, and self-motivated to work with us

**Position Summary**

VAFCS Jordan’s Principle Service Coordinator, reports to the Program Director, provides service coordination for First Nations children and their families. This position delivers case management, intake, assessment, and coordination to navigate VAFCS programs, federal and provincial health, social and education services, and ongoing support to address needs of applicants.

Serves as a point of contact for

(a) Aboriginal children and families,

(b) health care providers, and

(c) First Nations communities and organization requesting Jordan’s Principle support.

**Qualifications**

**Education**:
Bachelor’s degree in social work, Health field, or related field of study or Combination of education and/or experience related to social work, health care services.

**Experience**
- Strong understanding of complex case management
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Understanding of social, economic, and political issues affecting Aboriginal communities
- Knowledge of Aboriginal philosophies and values of varied cultures and traditions
- Lived Shared Aboriginal experience and how culture influences the development of individuals and communities
- Working knowledge of federal, provincial, and indigenous organizations mandated to provide health, counselling and Child and Family Services

**Other requirements**
- Successful completion of a Vancouver Police Department, Vulnerable Person Sector Check
- Valid BC Driver’s License and Driver's Abstract
- Cover letter, resume and 3 professional employment related references

**Background**

VAFCS originated in the late 50s because of the will and need of People’s leaving Indian Residential Schools without any support or means to survive. This Society incorporated on July 29th in 1963 as Vancouver Indian Centre Society later changing its name to Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre Society. The Aboriginal community has witnessed and embraced over 60 years of culturally enhanced programs and services. As an Aboriginal charitable organization, the society emphasizes the philosophies and values of varied cultures and traditions.

“Jordan’s Principle is a legal requirement resulting from the Orders of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal (CHRT) and is not a policy or program.

Jordan's Principle is a child-first principle that aims to eliminate service inequities and delays for First Nations children. Jordan’s Principle states that any public service ordinarily available to all other children must be made available to First Nations children without delay or denial.
