**Your Opportunity**

**Your Key Responsibilities**

Primary tasks, working under the supervision of project managers and Senior Biologists:

- Review, develop and lead aquatic effects monitoring programs including scoping, budgeting and resourcing.
- Lead and participate in field work using Stantec’s Standard Operating Procedures and industry standard protocols with support from experienced staff, including inventory and assessment of:
+ aquatic habitat, fish, freshwater mussels and other benthic macroinvertebrates,

+ sediment and water quality

+ Species at risk and other species of conservation concern
- Mentor and supervise junior staff through the conduct of field programs and report development
- Enter, compile, and analyze field data utilizing Stantec’s existing guidelines as well as adopting Provincial and Federal reporting requirements
- Prepare and review written communication and reporting documents suitable to satisfy Client expectations and Regulatory reporting requirements
- Prepare reports, including natural heritage input to a variety of planning projects such as species at risk assessments, environmental assessments, environmental impact studies, and ecological monitoring
- Assist with fish relocations (i.e., “fish salvage”) and mussel salvage and relocations
- Travel for work, including field work in remote locations, which may be more frequent during the peak field season (May-October), including on weekends and holidays
- Participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE) policies, procedures, standards and guidelines in the execution of all work

**Qualifications**

**Your Capabilities and Credentials**
- Valid driver’s license
- Enthusiasm for working in both field and office settings
- Ability to work well within a team environment while offering leadership capabilities
- Independent problem-solving abilities, and able to adapt to a changing work schedule
- Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills
- Strong organization and time management skills
- The following are desired assets, but not required:

- Previous work experience in fisheries and aquatic science

+ Experience completing fish community surveys or fish habitat assessments

+ Previous experience sampling surface water quality
- Familiarity with Manitoba and Saskatchewan’s freshwater fishes and their habitat requirements
- Experience in identifying fish and mussel species
- Familiarity with DFO’s _Projects Near Water_ guidance and associated regulations under the _Fisheries Act._ Experience in the development of Requests for Review, Fisheries Act Applications, development of offsetting projects and creation of monitoring programs to satisfy regulatory requirements
- Experience or familiarity with Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) protocols
- A valid backpack electrofishing certification
- Experience conducting statistical analyses in _R_
- Use of mobile digital data collection tools
- First Aid certification (training will be provided if needed)
- Previous experience operating boats and off-road vehicles (e.g., ATV, UTV, ARGO)

**Education and Experience**
- A Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field is required with a minimum of four years of experience as an ecologist, biologist or environmental scientist.

Our typical office environment involves working with computers and remaining relatively sedentary. Stantec offers a flexible work arrangement for desk-based tasks including working from Stantec office locations, working from home, or a mix depending on the situation. Field work may include exposure to inclement weather, and travel through rough and remote terrain, while carrying equipment.
