Serving patients in Hamilton and surrounding areas across Ontario, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (SJHH) is a robust academic health science centre where close to 20,000 surgical procedures are performed annually. SJHH’s technically advanced surgical program offers an extensive range of specialized services, provided through day surgery, inpatient care, and minor procedures outpatient care. Areas of focus include: General Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Gynecological Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, Ears/Eyes/Nose and Throat, Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Oral Surgery, Urology/Kidney Transplant, and Head and Neck.

**The Position**
The Chief of Surgery, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton (Chief) will be responsible for the leadership of the Surgery Program, a complex and high functioning program providing excellent, safe, and evidence-based surgical care. The Chief will champion best practice and quality initiatives in a dynamic inter-professional environment. The Chief will be instrumental in leading and advancing continued transformation in the surgical program, while recognizing and reinforcing the academic mission and mandate. Additionally, the Chief will provide leadership to a range of projects that will foster continued surgical innovations, while elevating system-level capacity to provide better access to care across the region. As a trusted advisor and collaborator, the Chief will be responsible for thought leadership in the realm of clinically effective use of the health information system, and in further optimizing its value and capacity for generating data. The Chief will be instrumental in continuing to integrate the best available evidence into all surgical decisions, while building capacity for the next generation of leaders.

**Key leadership initiatives for the Chief of Surgery will be to**:

- In collaboration with the Program Leadership, develop and implement a vision and strategy for the Surgery Program that seeks to enhance opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and multidisciplinary best practices.
- Advance a highly collaborative culture that supports active community engagement, academic and research endeavours, and strategic partnerships.
- Identify, develop, and implement key program initiatives that can maximize quality, advance transformative care, and adopt best practices across the continuum of the patient journey
- Continue to lead the advancement of key program initiatives such as surgical recovery, clinical care planning, and

renewed infrastructure.
- Partner and build relationships with internal and external providers, clinicians, teams, stakeholders, and leaders to

ensure optimal team performance and the provision of the highest quality and safest care to patients and families.
- Leverage technology to optimize efficiencies and digital innovations across the Program.

**Experience**

Surgeons of Ontario or eligible for licensure, with certification in a Surgical Specialty, as recognized by the Royal
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or other certification that is deemed to be equivalent. The successful
