The City of Winnipeg has an exciting opportunity for a Journeyman Machinist. The Journeyman Machinist works under the general supervision of the Foreman/Lead Hand Machinist and maintains or overhauls components and equipment to include disassembling, assembling, selection of methods, tools, equipment and materials needed to required standards and specifications. In the course of supervision of daily tasks, ensures the practice of established safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, fellow employees, the public, property and/or equipment operated by being continuously aware of existing and new safety procedures and concerns of the Department.
**As the** **_Machinist_** **you will**:
- Perform maintenance tasks including disassembling, assembling, selection of methods, tools, equipment and materials.
- Design machines/fabricate jigs and patterns to required standards and specifications meeting close tolerances.
- Perform diagnosis by testing or inspecting various types of mechanical equipment to ensure that the problem is corrected, and make required repairs in accordance with standards and specifications.
- Read and interpret drawings or blueprints estimating material and time necessary to fabricate and modify projects to given specifications.
- Respond to emergent situations, customer service requests, and complaints.
- Operate, clean, and maintain various types of vehicles/shop equipment, such as Shear, break, radial arm drill, hydraulic presses, conventional lathe, band saws, air tools etc.
- Write and maintain reports and records.
- Assist in training of new employees.
- Keep relevant knowledge current.
- Participate in the performance appraisal process.
- Supervise equipment yards and buildings as required.
- Maintain cooperative relations.
- Ensure the practice of established safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, fellow employees, the public, property and/or equipment operated by being continuously aware of existing and new safety procedures and concerns of the Department and the WFMA Safety Committee.
- Perform other duties consistent with the classification including the proper operation, cleaning and maintenance of any assigned vehicle, the perusal of the City for unsafe conditions in the course of carrying out the daily activities, reporting/rectifying irregularities, retrieving misplaced materials (such as signs, lumber, barricades, etc.), works overtime, various shifts and in the repair facilities as required.
**Your education and qualifications include**:
- A valid Journeyperson Machinist Certificate with Interprovincial Status and demonstrated ability in the trade.
- Significant experience (approximately 5 years) as a Journeyman Machinist.
- Experience using precision measuring instruments e.g. Micrometer/ Vernier calipers/dial indicators to meet close tolerances.
- Experience with general manufacturing and repair of parts and components/ transport equipment/ agricultural equipment and industrial machinery.
- Experience and proficiency with CNC machinery (i.e. Vertical CNC Mill), including programming, set up, operation, and maintenance.
- Experience performing mechanical repairs with an ability to work in both a shop and field environment.
- Ability to operate & program using HAAS control operating system and HAAS Wireless Intuitive Probing system.
- Ability to work in a fast past environment, while maintaining attention to detail and be able to meet tight deadlines.
- Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
- Excellent communicate skills with the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to deal effectively with staff members, members of other City departments and the public.
- Knowledge of shops section activities and related equipment/material requirements.
- Knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act to ensure customized vehicles meet standards.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the safety precautions/procedures applicable to shop utility maintenance operations.
- Knowledge of hydraulic equipment and repairs.
- A journeyman's ticket in Industrial Mechanics would be an asset.
- Experience and proficiency in AutoCAD would be considered an asset.
**Conditions of employment**:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must possess a valid Journeyperson Machinist Certificate with Interprovincial Status.
- Valid Manitoba Class 5 Driver's License and the ability to upgrade to a Class 3 with air brake endorsement within one (1) year.
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of this position (which may include, but is not limited to:
- lifting up to 50 lbs, crouching, crawling, climbing, working at heights, working in confined spaces, working with arms above head, etc.).
