The Learning Disabilities Association of Ottawa-Carleton is seeking experienced camp counselors for Sunshine Day Camp, its social skills development program for children aged 7 to 14 who have learning disabilities and/or ADHD.

The Camp Counsellor carries responsibility for the care, supervision, support and leadership of a group of campers aged between 7-14 throughout Sunshine Day Camp. Camp Counsellors will be responsible for the daily administration of the Sunshine Day Camp program, including ensuring the well-being and safety of all participants, administering games and activities, and maintaining a fun and safe environment for the participants. Paid training will be provided prior to the start of camp.

**Hours**:
Junior Counsellor hours - 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

Senior Counsellor hours - 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

**Responsibilities**:
Take responsibility for a group of 5 campers throughout the day, leading them through a planned schedule of activities, and supporting the goals of social skills development. The safety and positive experience of a group of campers in the hands of each counsellor.

Participate fully with the camp staff team in staff orientation and training sessions.

**In addition**:

- Initiate dialogue with the staff team, as needed, to facilitate campers with development of social skills, and problem solving for difficult camper behaviour.
- Collaborate with senior staff to communicate with parents of campers
- Liaise with the parents of campers in a positive, supportive manner.
- Lead program activities including recreation, sports, arts, games, social skills, and community trips
- Assist with program planning and coordinating daily schedules
- Support children with peer-to-peer relationship skill building, communication games and personal development experiences that build self confidence
- Engage in self-reflection when receiving constructive performance feedback from management

**Requirements**:

- Post-secondary student or professional in education, child and youth studies, recreation, psychology, social work, or related experience
- Strong asset: previous camp or youth program experience, or experience working with children with disabilities or special needs
- Ability to follow verbal and/or written directions/procedures
- Standard First Aid certification is strongly preferred
- Experience with crisis management and de-escalation is strongly preferred. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training a strong asset
- Ability to accompany and supervise participants in a variety of environments including aquatic and outdoor

**Job Types**: Full-time, Fixed term contract
Contract length: 6 weeks

Pay: $17.20-$18.55 per hour
