Cytotechnologist

Anatomic Pathology encompasses Histology, Cytology and Medical Transcription. Histology is the preparation of tissue samples for microscopic examination and diagnosis by a pathologist. Staff work closely with pathologists and a wide variety of departments to provide Anatomic Pathology services. Cytology is the preparation of two types of specimens, gynecological and non-gynecological. Cytology is the study of cell structure, cell composition, and the interaction of cells with other cells and the larger environment in which they exist. Medical Transcription is the transcribing of macroscopic and microscopic dictations for generating a report. Staff work closely with pathologists, Histology, Cytology, Hematology and Chemistry departments.

**Major Functions and Responsibilities**
- Ensures microscopic interpretation for adequacy
- Screens and interprets up to but not greater than ten (10) slides per hour devoted to full-time screening (maintains workload of 65 slides per 7.5 hour shift)
- Detects and marks, with high accuracy, the significant cellular and non-cellular elements most representative of the pathological process present in both gyne and non-gyne slides
- Performs necessary clerical duties associated with screening
- Refers gyne and non-gyne, with initial diagnosis, to designated individual as defined by the hierarchical review protocols
- Participates in CAP Performance Improvement Program and QMPLS External Proficiency Program
- Performs other additional duties as assigned by the Department Manager

Required Experience
- Recent Cytotechnologist screening experience is an asset

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Medical Laboratory Cytotechnologist with current CMLTA registration
- Flexibility to meet operational requirements including hours of work
