**Summer Student, Youth Employment Counsellor**
**Division**: Employment Services, Employment and Training
**Work Status**: Full-Time/Contract (June to August), 12 weeks
**Location**: Whitby
**About the Role**:
The Employment Services of John Howard Society is funded by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development. Its goal is to provide support to individuals to obtain sustainable employment through a full suite of services that include Information/Resource, Client Service Planning and Coordination, Job Search, Job Placement and Matching and Job Retention.
As part of Employment Ontario, Youth Job Connection is a program delivered by a network of service providers within the province. The program is designed to help youth between the ages of 15 and 29 who face complex barriers to employment. The goal is to achieve long-term employment, meaningful careers, and success in their future working lives.
**You'll be working on things like**:
- Determine youth eligibility and suitability for program, and their general employment and service needs
- Conduct participant intake and assessment to gather background information, clarify career and employment goals, identify factors that affect the individual’s ability to succeed in program, and determine individual’s interpersonal skills and motivation
- Development of employment service plan that includes an individual’s activities, services and supports based on their employment and employability needs and career goals
- Manage participant’s overall case and provide counselling and general support on a one-to-one basis
- Mentoring activities that support the development of interpersonal and relationship-building skills, “soft” skill that are the foundation of workplace interactions
- Develop and deliver relevant and current workshops or activities that support fundamental job readiness skills, career development/exploration, personal management (life) skills, job attainment skills, employment-related skills, and job maintenance and career advancement skills
- Facilitate job matching and placement supports
- Provide education and work transition support to bridge transition from the program to employment or further education
- Make follow-up contact to program participants after completion of program, at 3, 6, and 12 month intervals
- Maintain up-to-date case notes, progress reports and client files with clear rationale for methods and intervention used, and statistical documentation in accordance with the program requirements
- Complete accurate statistical and narrative reports
- Monitor and maintain financial tracking where required
- Maintain statistical data relative to program objectives including client and contractual information; participate in program record keeping in an accurate and auditable manner in accordance with established program procedures
- Communicate effectively and tactfully in both oral and written form

- Currently enrolled or have completed a post secondary education in a related field
- Work with and exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse racial, ethnic, disabled, sexual orientation, and cultural populations of individuals by treating individuals with respect and considers the impact of their actions.
- Acts with integrity
- Communicates effectively (verbal/written)
- Take initiative and show leadership
- Remain current in the field career counselling and training services, employing new practices and tools as appropriate
- Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary education in a related field.
- Be willing to submit to a police record and vulnerable sector check.
- Hold valid Class G drivers license OR have the demonstrated capacity to travel as needed within Durham Region.
