**POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES**:
The duties for this position may involve but are not limited to:

- Attend crime scenes in order to examine, collect, preserve and process and evaluate evidence.
- Liaise with investigators to obtain relevant information regarding the scene and develop a course of action to interpret or locate physical evidence at a crime scene utilizing operating procedures and guidelines.
- Assess and accurately document the crime scene prior to forensic examination and/or disturbance.
- Collect and preserve evidence for laboratory or forensic analysis.
- Examine and photograph crime scenes and seized articles for trace fingerprints, DNA, and documents.
- Consult and communicate with lead investigators regarding strategies and priorities for criminal investigations.
- Attend sudden death scenes in order to provide photography to document scenes.
- Attend court in order to provide evidence as a witness for criminal proceedings.
- Collect DNA from crime scenes, in the form of blood, saliva and other bodily fluids.
- Create reports through Versadex.
- Examine and review the SOCO queue daily in order to obtain and fulfill requests for scenes of crime examinations.
- Ensure equipment and supplies are available and operational on a continual basis.
- Complete a detailed notebook of daily events in accordance with Procedure LE-022.
- Maintain statistics and daily call report for the Forensic Identification Unit officers.
- Assess stock levels for district SOCO officers and restock as necessary.
- Monitor the district SOCO lockers and process and secure all evidence in property rooms for storage.
- Enhance level of expertise and forensic knowledge through courses, seminars and other training. This includes any recertification and/or examinations as required.

**MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Successful completion of a post-secondary degree in Science or Forensic Science from an accredited University.
- Minimum of one (1) year of previous experience in a laboratory or crime scene investigation environment.
- Ability to complete the York Regional Police or Canadian Police College Scenes of Crime (SOCO) course within one (1) year of hire.
- Valid Class “G” Driver’s License.

**PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS**:

- Exposure to crime scene examination technology and methods, including identifying and processing fingerprints and footwear and swabbing for DNA samples.
- Knowledge of internal systems, including Versadex in order to obtain requests for workflow and updating reports, CPIC, Speedtrak, MRE, MWS is an asset.
- Knowledge of photography, including technical knowledge of various camera equipment and Crime-lite.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision.
- Demonstrated time management skills.
- Problem solving abilities in order to determine the appropriate method to process the crime scene and depending on the circumstances of the crime scene and the nature of the crime, determine if the scene is safe for an FIA to attend.
- Communication and interpersonal skills to interact with members of York Regional Police at all ranks, members of the public including suspects and the accused to gather, present and documents evidence.

**ADDITIONAL COMMENTS**:

- This position works a rotating 4 on / 4 off shift schedule comprising of 2 x 11 hour dayshifts followed by 2 x 12 hour night shifts, which includes weekends and holidays.
- The successful incumbent must complete the York Regional Police or Ontario Police College or equivalent Scenes of Crime (SOCO) course within one (1) year from the date of obtaining the position.
- Successful incumbents shall be required to wear the approved Forensic Identification Assistant uniform/attire, including appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
