Based out of The Strathcona Wilderness Center, this position contributes to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational opportunities for the residents of Strathcona County and other members of the public through the safe operation of complex equipment. In this role, you will perform equipment operation and manual labour for areas that include cross-country ski trail grooming, trail maintenance, turf grass practices, horticultural and forestry maintenance, weed control, snow clearing, and amenity maintenance, etc.
**Responsibilities**
- Operates self-propelled and small equipment involved in parks operations in a safe and efficient manner to meet established standards (e.g., Snowmobiles, utility vehicles, tractors, front end loaders, skid steers, ride-on mowers, self-propelled snow sweepers/blowers, gas-powered and electric hand tools, implements, weed whips, push mowers, chainsaws, generators, chippers, drills, backpack sprayers, etc.)
- Performs day-to-day monitoring, maintaining, and servicing of equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards
- Monitors, maintains, and services equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards
- Uses and shares knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulations and Code, follow safety guidelines, identify potentially hazardous situations, and adapts appropriately
- Assists Equipment Operator II by training other staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment used in park operations
- Displays accountability when providing direction, training, and overseeing the work of small crews in the completion of assigned tasks
- Performs manual tasks required in all park operations, including the use of hand power tools and equipment (e.g., rakes, shovels, screwdrivers, paint brushes, etc.)
**Skills and Abilities**
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills to interact in a positive manner with others
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions, and to maintain concentration and alertness for extended periods of time
- Ability to adapt to new and changing situations, combined with initiative and responsibility
- Knowledge of OHS, SDS, and WHMIS Regulations, First Aid, and CPR
- Knowledge of County recreation areas and of safe operating procedures
- Proficiency in the use of a variety of related equipment and tools
**Qualifications**
- High School Diploma plus 2 years of related experience
- Demonstrated experience in ski area and/or trail maintenance, maintaining and grooming cross country ski trails, landscaping, construction, or forestry is an asset
- Current WHMIS, First Aid, and CPR certifications are an asset
- Available to work seasonal shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required
**Conditions of Employment**
- Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
- Current First Aid and CPR certification required prior to start date
- Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
- Equivalencies of education and experience may be considered._
