This RECE position is a part time contract position with the potential to be permanent. The hours will be either 2-6 or can be a split shift of 8-9:30 and 2-6. Start date to be determined. Included in the salary is a 4% holiday pay. We are also looking for supply staff as well as this position.
GENERAL RESPONSIBLITIES:
Is responsible for the overall program plan and implementation, in consultation with the Executive Director and Assistant Supervisor, age appropriate programs to enhance the children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development in accordance with the Child Care and Early Years Act, and the program criteria. Incorporates learning experiences designed to meet the individual needs of the children. Provides a physically safe and emotionally supportive environment showing sensitivity to the individual needs of children in all aspects of development. Ensures the philosophy of the program is upheld. Performs administrative functions. Maintains operation of the Centre in absence of the Executive Director. Coordinates program and student information sharing between the Day Care, School and other agencies involved with the child/children. Has awareness of all other staff positions and duties and responsibilities, and can fill that position when required.
WORK PROCEDURES:
- Works in consultation with the Executive Director and Assistant Supervisor and other staff to provide age-appropriate programs to enhance the children’s cognitive, physical social and emotional development.
- Provides a daily balance of active/quiet, indoor/outdoor, and individual/group activities.
- Establishes and carries out a schedule that incorporates child-directed activity, care and routines and transition times.
- Uses a variety of teaching techniques including modeling, observing, questioning, demonstrating and reinforcing.
- Develops and implements programs to promote and enhance creativity in all areas: creative, dramatic play, cognitive play, emotional awareness, music appreciation, science and nature, fine motor, gross motor and sensory activities.
- Provides a variety of material to encourage large and small muscle development for indoor and outdoor play, (coordinating and working with local childcare centres on special events and excursions).
- Provides positive social experiences including sharing, cooperation, respect for others and self-sufficiency: value systems.
- Provides experiences and play materials that actively promote anti-racist and non-sexist integration’s and attitudes.
- Assist children in routine procedures such as eating lunches and preparation of snacks, dressing, sleep room etc.
- Conducts daily health checks of children; records of all medications administered.
- Administers first aid as required, and records/reports same. (forms required to be filed: Serious occurrence if necessary filed with the Ministry of Community and Social Services, Accident Report Forms to be filed with the Toronto Board of Education.
- Carry out safe arrival and departures of children each day.
- Accompanies children on field trips, booking and arranging, overnight camping during summer day camp.
- Responsible for group during fire drills.
- Conducts fair, progressive and consistent disciplinary method in accordance with the program’s philosophy.
- Discusses the children’s progress/behavior/health with parents/designated family members/school staff, answering questions regarding children, the group and the centre, while maintaining confidentiality. Promotes parental involvement. Completes children’s progress charts for parents when necessary.
- Obtains appropriate supplies for planned activities: checks that the activity area, toys and equipment are safe and sanitary; sets up activity area and tidies same.
- Observes and assesses children’s progress and behaviour to ensure programs meet identified individual and group needs. Recommends referral of children to outside support agencies for special needs as necessary.
- Completes developmental profiles when necessary.
- Assist in the evaluation of programs and recommends new/and or modified programming to improve effectiveness in meeting needs of children.
- Participates in educational assessment conferences with outside agencies and makes individual program recommendations. i.e. School Age Conference and workshops.
- Works with the Ministry Staff and other regulators around licensing issues.
- Assists with administrative tasks (e.g. recording attendance, recommending purchases of new equipment, receiving and recording goods, answering telephone, documenting serious occurrences, accident reports, medication administered, etc., adjusting schedules due to absences to meet established staff-child ratios).
