Established in 1993 and located 35 minutes east of Calgary in Strathmore, Alberta, the True North Society is a registered non-profit organization that provides ongoing support and services to individuals and families who are affected by family violence. We are committed to a vision of interrupting the cycle of abuse through empowerment to create a safe environment for all. Our success is achieved by offering a slate of programming that is diverse and reflective of the needs of the families and the community we serve. This includes an emergency shelter program that temporarily houses up to 25 individuals and/or families as well as outreach, early intervention and public education programming that serves the community at large. We are considered a valuable service provider in the community and are a member of the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS).
**The Opportunity**
The Society is seeking a **Part Time Family Counsellor** with skills in a variety of counselling therapeutic modalities and able to work with all ages.
The hours for this role are 20 hours per week, with daytime and evening hours. The Family Counsellor Role requires flexibility to meet the needs of the clients and the program including meeting clients out in the community. True North believes in providing services to those in crisis as soon as possible and will require the Family Counsellor to provide the occasional drop-in sessions. This position will report to the Programs & Client Services Manager.
**The Role**
The Family Counsellor is responsible for responding to client and agency needs as they arise, and provide individual, family and group counselling supports, client advocacy, goal planning, and excellent assessment, intervention, and problem-solving skills. Must possess a strong client-centred and trauma-informed approach and have experience working across the lifespan. Must be self-motivated, independent, non-judgemental and participate well within a team setting. Must possess an awareness of community resources and represent the society during case conferences, community partner meetings, presentations, and interagency meetings as appropriate. The Family Counsellor will collaborate with other teams at True North and support with planning and delivering relevant workshops to staff and community members on a as needed basis.
Must have strong computer skills, including attention to detail and some data entry experience. Must have the ability to communicate significant information and developments to other staff members, agencies, and/or stakeholders both in writing and verbally.

- Understanding of, and adherence to FOIP, PIPA, and ACSW/CASW ethics and standards of practice. Adherence to confidentiality, professional boundaries and ethics are paramount to all positions at True North.
- Strong interpersonal skills combined with excellent organizational, problem-solving and communication skills are critical
- High standards of professional integrity and proficiency
**Qualifications**:
- Masters Degree in Social Work, Counselling, Therapy or related social service discipline
- Registration with designated Provincial licensing body
- Experience working with individuals with complex needs Two plus years of counselling experience
**Licenses and Certifications**:
- Child Intervention and Criminal Record Check required
- CPR/First Aid and Suicide intervention training an asset
