The Peninsula and Norgarden Retirement Communities are currently hiring a full time Maintenance Assistant. Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, the Maintenance Assistant provides preventative maintenance, emergency repairs, and timely response to routine maintenance and repair requests for buildings, grounds, and equipment.

The job duties below are representative of a day at work:

- Conduct scheduled move in/out inspections, and supervise moves
- Perform preventive maintenance checks
- Respond to emergencies, including power outages, floods or fires
- Detect deficiencies and remedy them
- Work hand-in-hand with the Housekeeping Department
- Report any concern regarding residents to management
- Maintain roof and drains and perform minor repairs
- Hang pictures, mirrors, etc. for our residents
- Repair doors, windows, locks, as well as fences and gates
- Fix or replace plumbing fixtures, and attend to plugged toilets and sinks
- Fix or replace faulty electrical fixtures and wiring
- Carry out exterior maintenance, including repair of brick pavers
- Exterior and interior painting

The position is three days a week (there is some flexibility on which days of the week), 7.5 hours a day with a 30 minute unpaid break. There is an expectation of availability for on call depending on the workload. The availability for weekend / weeknight call outs for emergencies is a requirement.

**Qualifications**
- **Must have** training in building and systems maintenance and/or two years of related experience in building and systems maintenance
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical and HVAC
- Broad variety of ‘handyman’ skills is mandatory
- Ability and knowledge to effectively understand building operations/systems
- Able to read blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogues
- Ability to use basic computer programs (Excel, Word)
- Excellent time-management skills
- Excellent customer service skills are mandatory
- Ability to relate well with seniors
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License (Class 4 is an asset)
- Must be able to pass a Criminal Record check
- Must have First Aid - before you start the position
