The Team Leader in Operating Room is accountable to provide clinical expertise and leadership to ensure continuity of quality patient care for assigned services. They co-ordinate and collaborate with other Team Leaders, Nurses, Surgeons, Anaesthesiologists, and Management in the organization of daily clinical operations and patient flow.

The team leader role supports ongoing liaison with surgeons, other departments, sales representatives, and MDRD staff to address new procedure, procedure codes, supplies, instrument and equipment, patient safety and protocol reviews. They must be able to rapidly analyze situations in real time, and demonstrate excellent critical thinking and problem solving. The Team Leader role includes review of surgical service bookings for accuracy, impact, preparation, problem-solving and coordination of staff, supplies, instrumentation and equipment for operative procedures.

The Team Leader seeks opportunities to identify and implement methods to improve patient care outcomes, financial outcomes and physician and staff engagement. They participate and lead in Perioperative and organizational quality improvement initiatives (OR Efficiency, Accreditation). They set clinical practice expectations for staff to develop expertise with specialized service skills and equipment.

They promote a safe environment for all staff ensuring timely review and response to safe reports and including provision of education and support during emergency codes. The Team Leader contributes to provision of a supportive learning environment for new staff and students in collaboration with education staff and other program supports. Managing a workload in a fast paced environment, the Team Leader role models and creates a culture of respect particularly when addressing and resolving issues.

Qualifications:

- Currently registered with the Ontario College of Nurses.
- Perioperative Nursing Certificate Required.
- BScN Preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years OR experience required.
- 1 year of leadership experience specifically in Thoracic surgery is strongly preferred.
- Current BLS Certificate.
- Demonstrated effective communication with the interprofessional team both written and verbal.
- Strong critical thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution and change management skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and team building skills.
- Demonstrated ability to teach staff using adult learning principles.
- Commitment towards professional development.
- Membership and attendance in RNAO, ORNAC, is an asset.
- Availability to work all shifts, weekend and on call as required.
- Satisfactory attendance record.
