Executive Producer - CBC News Parliamentary Bureau
The pace of change in Canadian politics is at a level not seen in decades, spurred by a political landscape being reshaped by a new prime minister and a new dynamic on Parliament Hill with global disruptions forcing Canada to re-imagine its most important trade and security relationships.
It means the job of CBC News’ Parliamentary Bureau is as important and challenging as ever. CBC News is looking for an exceptional editorial leader with a focus on driving news and staff development to lead the daily political news coverage as an Executive Producer in the Parliamentary Bureau.
Reporting to the Parliamentary Bureau’s Director of Journalism, you will support a team of journalists to unearth, explain and report political news through compelling storytelling, programs, podcasts and live coverage on all platforms.

You know how to build a respectful newsroom culture where people are motivated to support each other in delivering journalism that resonates with Canadians and helps them make sense of federal politics, meets the CBC News strategy to grow new audiences and the mission of being live and breaking.
Overseeing a team of senior producers, you’ll work with colleagues across the CBC News division, sharing both content and expertise across platforms and programs in support of CBC’s goals.
While editorial excellence is an important focus of this job, it also requires exceptional leadership skills. Working with the Director, you’ll guide and support your senior producers as they help staff grow and develop. You provide regular feedback to team members, including producers, hosts, writers and associate producers. You work with the Assignment Producers to schedule teams and drive editorial. You care for the physical and mental wellbeing of your team and co-ordinate support with the Director as required.
Core Responsibilities:
- Drive editorial to determine story priorities, develop innovative content strategies and guide teams through live, breaking and ongoing news stories.- Respond and co-ordinate coverage of major events/breaking news in conjunction with the bureau assignment desk, often in partnership with CBC colleagues or freelancers at the local, national and international level and in a live environment.- Oversee the senior producers assigning the writing, researching, gathering, editing, vetting and distribution of content against CBC News editorial strategy.- Provide strong direction through the day to the team on expectations around story coverage including length, deadlines, updates, treatments and value-added material, ensuring close collaboration between news units.- Monitor stories across platforms and programs to ensure breadth of coverage, variety of innovative treatments and quality of work throughout the day.- In coordination with finance staff, manage the costing of special coverage and deployments.- Ensure teams are meeting audience needs and that they have the tools to support this work.- Along with the Director, ensure compliance with the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices, including editorial sign-off on sensitive or complex stories.- Answer Ombudsman complaints and manage external and internal editorial issues in collaboration with the Director.- In partnership with the Director, be responsible for staffing and hiring decisions; staff development; training; performance management; feedback; schedules and outreach for the program team.
