**Showcase your general grounds keeping, snow removal, and general maintenance skills**
Join our team in beautiful Penetanguishene - a town with a picturesque and protected harbour, and a rich heritage and culture. We look forward to welcoming one** dedicated grounds worker** who will perform general groundskeeping and minor maintenance. They will also escort external tradespeople throughout our facilities while they perform skilled trades work. Given this position works with inmate helpers, a** shift premium** will be added to every pay.
**About the job**: Working on small maintenance team, you will enjoy a variety of tasks and a steady work schedule (Mondays-Fridays). In this role you can expect to:
- Plan, implement and maintain the grounds keeping and gardening services
- Operate and maintain equipment (eg. garden tractors, rotor tillers, lawn mowers and weed eaters)
- Perform semi-skilled maintenance work such as fixing locks, minor plumbing, carpentry, painting and welding tasks, and help skilled tradespeople
- Maintain the facility's walkways and operate snow removal equipment
- Oversee the removal of garbage and recycling
- Supervise and instruct selected inmate helpers
**What you bring to the team**:
**Mandatory Requirement**:
- Valid driver's license to operate snow plow trucks
- Current First Aid and Heartsaver or the ability to obtain
- Pesticide licence or the ability to obtain
**Technical Knowledge and Skills**:
- You have an understanding of the planning required to perform grounds keeping and gardening services
- You can operate and maintain grounds keeping tools and equipment (eg, garden tractor, lawn mower, weed eater)
- You have knowledge of semi-skilled trades such as plumbing, carpentry, welding, masonry and painting
- You understand blueprints and drawings
- You know about of environmental waste management regulations and institutional safety practices
**Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills**: You are able to:
- Determine when planting, fertilizing and pruning should occur
- Identify and mix pesticides needed for spraying, when establishing appropriateness of ground and soil conditions for planting, e.g. shrubs, flowers
- Perform scheduled maintenance or repair services where problems are identifiable, and alert supervisor/skilled tradespersons of major problems requiring assessment
**Communication Skills**: You have the ability to:
- Give information to offender helpers in grounds keeping and general maintenance work, and to liaise with correctional staff
- Give input to inmate performance reports so that corrective action can be prompt
- Interact with and counsel offender helpers and when responding to requests for maintenance work from ministry staff
- Write reports (behaviour) and to maintain logs, prepare requests for materials.
**Health and Safety Knowledge**: You comprehend and are able to demonstrate:
- The safe operation of a variety of hand and power tools to perform maintenance duties, e.g. installing vents.
- Institutional security practices/procedures to ensure compliance with standards
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act, and institutional security practices/procedures to ensure compliance with standards, proper equipment operation/utilization and to maintain the safety and security of the work area and offender helpers.
- Environmental waste management regulations for garbage and hazardous waste; oil heating equipment, boilers, sewage and water plant operations
- Correct methods of repair and selecting tools to be used when performing semi-skilled duties, e.g. shaping metal parts, repairing small leaks in water lines.
