The main focus of the Electronics Technician position is to manage requests from Division sites pertaining to electronic maintenance or modernization projects from start to completion. The job coordinates Division electronics systems projects, including planning, diagramming, scheduling, conducting on-site inspection, facilitating and coordinating with project participants. The job is also responsible for documenting electronic systems, projects and assisting with the installation and maintenance of electronic systems as required.
Work involves procedures of a technical nature and uses hand tools and various sophisticated test equipment. The incumbent works with mínimal supervision or as part of various teams in completing projects and activities.
Responsibilities require a qualified journeyman Electronic/Communication Technician trades certificate or a graduate in Electronics from a technical institute with indenture as an apprentice electronic technician along with related training and experience. Equivalencies will be considered i.e. Employees/Applicants without journeyman qualifications, but with demonstrated ability and years of experience. Apprentices shall receive the appropriate percentage of the journeyman rates of pay as specified in the regulations pursuant to the Apprenticeship and Industry Trade Act.
Work is performed within the Division/department policies and procedures and is guided by electronic, construction and maintenance standards and principles and those established by the department. Work is completed in compliance with the Alberta Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) regulations and guidelines and the Division’s goals and objectives.
There is considerable discretion exercised by the incumbent in the performance of regular duties.
**JOB RESPONSIBILITIES**
1. Project management
- Participate as a member of a project planning and design team, utilize independent judgement and input from team members
- Determine where repairs are required and the most efficient method to complete the work
- Manage inventory control including purchasing, receiving, shipping, and categorizing supplies, materials and equipment related to each project assigned
- Assist in development of preventive maintenance program and assess existing electronic system for modernization
- Assist department staff with a variety of projects and provide cover-off during absences
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
2. Maintenance and repairs
- Diagnose and repair various electronic equipment and systems, such as classroom audio and video systems, intrusion alarm systems, surveillance systems, public address systems, correctable clock systems, large venue AV systems with digital signal processing and touch panel controls, access control systems, digital signage systems
- Complete preventive maintenance tasks at scheduled intervals
- Identify problems through on-site inspections and report to supervisor - may determine alternatives for corrective action and present recommendations to supervisor for resolution.
- Assist in worksite cleanup
- Ensure tools and equipment are operating properly and report those that are not
- Ensure worksites are clean and maintained within safety standards
3. New installations
- Plan, install, configure electronic system equipment, such as classroom audio and video systems, intrusion alarm systems, surveillance systems, public address systems, correctable clock systems, large venue AV systems with digital signal processing and touch panel controls, access control systems, digital signage systems.
- Install required cabling and conduit to support system installation
4. Building security
- Ensure materials and tools are safely operated and stored at all times
- Secure building as required depending on worksite requirements
**JOB QUALIFICATIONS**
