The Regional Food Distribution Association (‘RFDA’) is a designated “hub” for charitable food distribution, as a member of the provincial association Feed Ontario, and Food Banks Canada, in Northwestern Ontario; providing food to food banks, feeding programs, social assistance programs, and responding to communities in crisis.

**Detailed Description - Kitchen Assistant**

The kitchen assistant position reports to the Food Services Manager (‘FSM’) of the RFDA, and will provide assistance to the Food Services Manager in the community kitchen, of which provides a diverse array of food services to member agencies, food programs, community groups, agencies, and schools within Thunder Bay and immediate region. The kitchen assistant, under the direction of the FSM, will have a focus on food preparation, food processing, working with volunteers, cleaning and sanitizing, and any other duties as deemed appropriate to the organization.

In accordance with our vision statement, the kitchen assistant will be required to behave in a professional manner, relate, respect, and communicate well with volunteers, staff, visitors, etc.

The kitchen assistant will learn from the FSM valuable kitchen skills ranging from basic food prep, safe food handling practices, various cooking and baking techniques, safe kitchen work practices, and cleaning and sanitizing, as well as other tasks as assigned related to the everyday operations of the RFDA.

**Primary Functions and Duties**
- Learn and follow safe food handling practices
- Log important data related to the safe operations of the kitchen
- Safe and proper operation of various kitchen equipment including but not limited to; dishwasher, food processor, food mixer, dehydrator, slicer, Rational Combi Oven, conventional gas oven, gas stove, grill, soup kettle
- Use safe knife handling practices to prepare various food
- Receive direction from FSM to learn skills related to the role
- Work with various volunteers to prepare sandwiches, soups, and other items as necessary
- Adhere to workplace health and safety standards
- Menu and food prep planning
- Utilizing food on hand to either preserve or use in recipes related to the output of product from the community kitchen
- Reporting any workplace hazards to their supervisor or equivalent
- Other duties as assigned related to the everyday operations of the RFDA

**Minimum Qualifications**
- Funding for this position is through Canada Summer Jobs for youth between the ages of 15 and 30
- Interest and general knowledge of food, nutrition and preparation
- Willing to obtain the necessary certificates and credentials for this role (Safe Food Handling, WHMIS, etc.)
