The Echocardiography lab (Echo lab), Non-Invasive Vascular lab (Vascular lab) and ECG department provide diagnostic, clinical, research and teaching services for in-patient and out-patient populations in accordance with established practices and procedures. The Echo Lab is holds IAC Accreditation (The Intersocietal Commission for Echocardiography) and is also accredited through IQMH (Ontario). The Vascular Lab holds ICAVL accreditation (The Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Vascular Laboratories). Two of these areas (ECG and Echo) are affiliated with the academic institution, Mohawk College and provide training for their students, as well as participating in internal training of Cardiology and surgical residents and fellows. The Vascular lab is affiliated with the General Ultrasound program at The Michener Institute.

**Responsibilities**
- Provides operational leadership to all three labs
- Provides clinical and technical expertise for the successful performance of echocardiographic procedures.
- Assists and supports Managers in the successful planning, development, administration and smooth execution of daily operations.
- Assists the Manager in identifying customer needs, staffing requirements, equipment requirements, human resources, scheduling, measuring and reporting operational performance and statistical indicators.
- Assists the Manager in achieving and maintaining cost efficient operations
- Maintains knowledge base to support and promote clinical best practices and state of the art equipment.
- Orientate new staff to the department and ensure they are familiar with departmental policies, work schedules, and policy and procedures/standards of practice
- Collects data, prepare, and submit statistical reports, including monthly workload units, and other reports according to hospital and outside requirements.
- Liaise with manufacturers for equipment failures, service, upgrades and with various vendors for locating the most cost effective replacement parts.
- Implements and ensures IQMH (Institute for Quality management in Healthcare) and IAC (Intersocietal Accreditation Committee) QA standards, policies, guidelines and competencies are followed.
- Responsible for inventory control of supplies to ensure adequate availability of materials for a wide variety of procedures, balancing par volumes and projected need. (TPL and PPE)
- Working collaboratively with the Directors of the Echo, Vascular Lab and ECG Dept., Manager of Heart & Vascular, and medical heads to implement operational plans to achieve strategic directions.
- Supervises and promotes continuous quality improvement including accreditation for better efficiencies in terms of throughput, turn around, workload, and productivity.
- Completes quarterly technical reviews for sonographers as per accreditation standards
- Assists with staff development and training, and ensures clinical and technical competency is maintained
- Develops clinical and research Echo techniques and processes with medical staff to improve patient care, throughput and efficiencies.
- Independently scan patient in various positions acquiring views to obtain optimal 2D, 3D, m-mode, colour Doppler, TDI, phono, PW & CW spectral Doppler images.
- Notifies and consults with Cardiologist results of examination, which include critical and potential life-threatening cases. Eg. Tamponade, aortic dissection, myocardial rupture, VSD, etc.
- Performs scheduling for research studies and billing
- Maintains a quality control record of instrument service, testing, and upgrades.
- Maintains policy and procedure development
- Prepares payroll
- Prepares staffing schedules for Vascular lab, Echo lab, and ECG department
- Organizes and holds staff meetings with/without manager
- Fosters (and mentors) a positive atmosphere that supports team building, collaboration, and learning.
- Maintains clinical echocardiographic expertise through active clinical practice

**Qualifications**
- CMRITO required
- CRCS - Canadian Registered Cardiac Sonographer/Sonography Canada - as of January 2011 required
- RDCS - Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer as per ARDMS required
- Current CPR required
- Bachelor's degree required
- Graduate of an accredited educational program in Cardiac Sonography. Must complete two exams, Physical principles & instrumentation, and corresponding specialty (Echo) exam.
- Requires specialized skills, critical thinking and problem solving ability, medical knowledge including anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to render quality patient care.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, detail and organizations skills, leadership, and time management skills.
- Microsoft Word and Excel an asset
