Your role

As a news writer/presenter for Radio-Canada in Toronto, you will write and present a mix of local, regional, national, and international headlines and news on the radio. Working in a highly integrated newsroom, you may also be asked to present reports and news content on other platforms as needed.

You demonstrate and maintain strong organizational skills and presentation abilities, as well as the ability to react quickly to tight deadlines. You work in accordance with Radio-Canada's journalistic and programming policies, as well as the organization's standards and practices.

As a reporter/writer, you will be expected to carry out reporting and editorial tasks, including gathering information, writing, and presenting programming materials primarily for digital platforms, but occasionally for radio and television as well.

Guidance is available, but you must demonstrate initiative and good judgment. You may be required to coordinate the activities of others, and close collaboration with the program unit is essential.

Main tasks:
- Gather reports prepared by Radio-Canada reporters on local, regional, national, and international issues from various sources.- Prepare the news bulletin, create the lineup, and read the bulletin on air.- Facilitate the flow and sharing of information between local, regional, and national newsrooms.- Rewrite articles as needed to adapt them to the local and regional audience.- If necessary, perform the following tasks:
- Handle the technical duties needed to broadcast hourly news bulletins, and headlines every half-hour if needed.-
- Prepare and read headlines every half-hour.-
- Present short weather updates for the relevant region on air.-
- Promote upcoming Radio-Canada programs.-
- Conduct live interviews with reporters on the ground or present breaking news.-
- Log each news bulletin.-
- Edit news bulletins submitted by journalists if needed.-
- Upload spoken inserts into the computer system for use in the news bulletin.-
- Prepare the news bulletin for publication on the Corporation’s website.-
- Perform all reporter or writer functions across all platforms.-
- Establish and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.- Analyze the facts and information gathered, draw conclusions, or identify issues requiring further research.- Write web content and enhance it with interactive elements.- Prepare and write scripts, links, and headlines.- Collect information from various sources and report on it.- Select the elements that should be included in a segment, their order, length, and sequence, as well as the transitions between segments.- Provide ideas or content for programming and participate in preparing newsroom objectives.- Prepare content specifically for social media platforms.

Please note that this is a hybrid position: a morning news writer/presenter role on Saturdays and Sundays, with three (3) other days of the week dedicated to reporting and writing tasks, primarily focused on digital production.

Profile sought:
- A bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least four (4) years of experience in journalism, along with strong on-air presentation skills- Knowledge of Radio-Canada’s journalistic and programming policies- Comfortable with live broadcasting- Ability to write clearly, concisely, and engagingly to deliver strong presentations- Excellent oral communication skills- Familiarity with issues affecting the Francophone community and Southern Ontario in general- Ability to work with diverse teams- Demonstrate critical thinking- Proven ability to work under high stress in a deadline-driven environment- Understanding of the role and responsibilities of a public broadcaster- Excellent knowledge of French and the ability to work in English
