Cultural Coordinator - Housing
**Hours of Work**:37.5 per week flexible based on position needs

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Director of Children’s Housing, the Cultural Coordinator will provide opportunities and encouragement for individuals to participate in traditional teachings, ceremonies, events, and activities by organizing, coordinating and/or facilitating activities. The Cultural Coordinator will act as a collaborator within Women’s Housing and Children’s Housing to coordinate culturally appropriate services and events to program participants. The coordinator will provide support in programming i.e. openings, smudging ceremonies, etc.
This role will have direct contact with knowledge and language keepers, Elders, Matriarchs, drummers, singers, dancers, etc., and access them as resources for housing. The worker will encourage children, youth, residents, staff and other program participants in accessing other healthy lifestyle and culturally appropriate programming as applicable. This position works closely and collaboratively with the Cultural Coordinator - Programs.
**Responsibilities**:
Program Management:
- Prepares and delivers culturally relevant programming and language lessons
- Organizes traditional events, such as feasts and ceremonies, arranges the attendance and participation of Elders and community members.
- Encourages residents, children, and staff to participate in cultural and traditional events.
- Collects, organizes, and gathers Indigenous resources, materials etc.
- Maintains cultural items on site.
- Maintains up to date Elder/Knowledge Keeper list.
- Assists Elders in evenings when programming and/or ceremonies take place.
- Assists with ceremonies, ensures area is clean, and maintained, etc.
Program Administration/Reporting:
- Prepares monthly program calendar and activity reports of cultural events.
- Adheres to and is responsible for the completion of reporting requirements for funding agencies
- Maintains, orders and is responsible for ensuring inventory of the program supplies/materials/resources is sufficient to maximize use and minimize loss.
- Ensuring a healthy and safe environment
- Ensures residents, children and staff will be provided with a safe and supportive environment that is culturally relevant and culturally appropriate which will help to develop socially, intellectually, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
- Positive and effective communication
- Works as a team member, striving to create a healthy and happy atmosphere of caring, growth, learning, stimulation, creativity, and respect, utilizes Indigenous teachings and ways of being.
- Fosters and maintains a positive relationship with Elder/Knowledge Keeper in the community.
- Fosters and maintains positive and productive relationships with the children, parents/caregivers, family, community, professionals, and co-workers.
General Duties
- Assists Elder/Knowledge Keeper as required.
- Maintains regular and open communication with program team members and coworkers and provides support to daily operations.
**Working Conditions**:
The Cultural Coordinator will be required to be out in the community, which includes indoor and outdoor environments in all seasons. Traditional medicines and healing practices are utilized in ceremonies and circles. This position requires the Cultural Coordinator to deal with a wide variety of people with challenging personal issues, which can be stressful at times.
**Qualifications**:
- Previous experience in program development or coordination and/or a post-secondary Indigenous
studies diploma/degree.
- Ongoing involvement with Indigenous culture and traditions, comprehensive knowledge,
- understanding and awareness of Indigenous traditions, ceremony, teachings, and practices.
- Understanding of the barriers and issues facing Indigenous individuals.
- Passionate in regard to the health and well-being of children and families.
- Ability to effectively work as a team player with staff, parents, and residents.
- Ability to work independently and ensure confidentiality.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills and takes initiative.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
