SERDC Health is accredited by the Canadian Accreditation Council to provide exceptional 2nd level services to eight or more First Nations communities in Manitoba.
The
**_FIRE with FIRE _**initiative is a project that aims to build a robust response to substance use behavior in Southeast Tribal communities of Manitoba. The initiatives acronym stands for Fully Informed Risk Education with Foundation of Individual Recovery Experiences. Fire with Fire was born out of experiences that First Nations individuals had when evacuated from rural and remote communities.
SERDC intends to hire a
**_Peer Coordinator _**who will
_ _carry out duties and activities in partnership with the Project Coordinator, Cultural Support providers, and the Mental Wellness Team utilizing a cultural and strength-based approach.
The Peer Coordinator will assist in developing and enhancing
**_Community Quick Response Teams_** that consist of peers with lived/living experience of substance use behavior. Therefore, the
**_Peer Coordinator_** will have substantial lived/living experience, recovery experience, and an individual who believes in a harm reduction approach and principles.
**Responsibilities**:
- Motivate, mentor, support, and encourage up to twenty-one peers in the seven-member first nation communities.
- Assist in developing and/or enhancing community quick response teams comprised of peers with lived/living experience of substance use behavior.
- Work alongside the mental wellness team and cultural support providers.
- Support and develop Community Quick Response Teams consisting of peers with lived/living experience of substance use behavior.
- Assist in the collection and storage of statistics necessary for program evaluation.
- Assist in collecting and managing confidential data and information in adherence to relevant policies.
- Advocate and liaise with/for those in need of specific services.
- Assist in case management by utilizing client and family-centered plans involving wrap-around services.
- Liaise with the community members and resources within the community.
- Work with local community staff to assess needs.
- Ability to work with youth, families, and community leaders.
- Risk/Crisis Management.
- Prepare reports as required, including statistical data for federal reporting.
**Qualifications/Requirements**:
- Lived experience with substance use behavior and recovery.
- High level of organizational, administrative, and facilitative skills.
- Experience working with peers is an asset.
- First Aid/CPR certification is an asset but will be provided.
- Ability to fly into remote northern First Nation communities.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel.
- Occasional overnight stays in remote first nations communities.
- Valid Criminal Record Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Acceptable Child Abuse and Adult Abuse Registry Checks.
- Preference is given to SERDC Band Members or First Nations applicants who self-declare.
This position is at the SERDC Wellness Lodge - 225 Masters Ave, West St Paul, MB with
**extensive travel to the communities.**
