Reporting to the Supervisor, Animal Services, through the provision of exemplary customer service, ensure the safety of the public and animals by educating and enforcing City by-laws and Provincial legislation regarding the control of domestic and wild animals (e.g., dogs, cats, horses, deer, raccoons, skunks, birds, rodents, snakes, etc.); educate and collaborate with the public regarding compliance with animal related legislation and responsible pet ownership.

Job responsibilities are broken down as follows; 55% working with citizens, 20% dealing with the animals, 20% computer related tasks and 5% cleaning and sanitizing issued equipment, vehicle and office space. This position is focused as public relations-oriented work requiring the ability to communicate tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Provide excellent customer service.
- Respond to complaints of animals in distress, sick or injured. Required to provide expert handling to rescue, transport and release animals safely.
- Assess the health status of animals for injury or illness in order to determine the correct course of action to take such as impound, isolate, transport to veterinarian or euthanize.
- Educate and work with the residence to attempt compliance with regards to animal related legislations. If education and collaboration is not successful, enforce municipal by-laws and other legislation pertaining to animals.
- Issue Provincial Offence Notices, licenses and orders as required.
- Required to take witness statements, gather evidence and prepare court documents. Ensure all evidence and information is kept in a manner that follows best practices and Continuity.
- Required to appear and testify in court proceedings and appeal tribunals.
- Attend and investigate all dog bites while liaising with the supervisor.
- Patrol the City while operating a City vehicle or on foot.
- Pick-up deceased animals from public or private property. Arrange for the removal of large animals.
- Required to euthanize wildlife following best practices. Must assess and determine when the euthanasia of wildlife is necessary. Occasionally required to assist in the tranquilization and euthanasia of shelter animals.
- Apprehend stray domestic animals and injured/ill wildlife and transport to shelter.
- Complete detailed reports (i.e. animals picked-up, violations issued, suspected rabid animals) on all incidents in computer system and black books.
- Complete daily vehicle circle checks and Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
- Provide assistance and information to public or refer to appropriate agencies; participate in special events and community projects i.e. shelter tours, school talks, etc. to present information and help our community.
- Collect and record fees and fine payments for tags, veterinarian charges, impound, etc. Issue receipts.
- Maintain Animal Control equipment and vehicle by regular maintenance, cleaning and disinfection.
- Pick up and deliver mail, licenses and supplies as required.
- Routinely prepare for and/or transport animals to and from spay/neuter appointments. Transport shelter animals to and from veterinary clinics or groomers for miscellaneous appointments, surgeries and emergency health care.
- Assist with shelter programming such as but not limited to; Adoptions and fostering programs by providing transport of animals, equipment, food, medication and pertinent records to and from various locations.
- Recommend new or changes to Animal Control policies and procedures for review and approval by senior staff.
- Liaise with Public Health, Peel Regional Police or other outside agencies as required.
- Performs after-hours emergency services for high priority activities as defined by the department.
- Actively engages the public, volunteers and other agencies to support lifesaving, successful compliance and community programs.
- Performs additional similar and related duties as assigned.

**SELECTION CRITERIA**:

- High School (Grade 12) graduation plus an additional program of over one and up to two years in Veterinary Technology, Animal Health Technology, Police Foundations, Law & Security or equivalent.
- Over one (1) year experience in animal control or handling and/or caring for animals in an animal care facility.
- Valid non-probationary Ontario Class G driver’s lic
