**The Program - Respite Care Connection**
The Respite Care Connection promotes, strengthens, and preserves the right for children with developmental disabilities to have access to recreational programming where their needs are met, while also giving caregivers a break. The program works toward this goal by providing caregivers with time to take care of themselves and/or their other children while their child is in program and fostering opportunities to develop confidence and new skills amongst participants. The Respite Care Connection is a community-based program for children and youth aged 6-17 years.
**The Position
- Community Respite Worker**
The Community Respite Worker will participate in and supervise recreational activities for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities. Additionally, they will communicate confidently with caregivers to support youth with complex needs. Clients have diagnoses such as ADHD, FASD and ASD and the program focuses on strengthening self-esteem, skill development, and socialization skills. This is facilitated in a fun, structured and safe environment with a ratio of one staff to three youth, through both in-house and in-community environments. Team members need to be available for the following shifts each week during the school year (times may vary slightly):
Saturdays 11:30 - 5:30 pm
Sundays 11:30 - 5:30 pm
The successful applicant will have the following **Skills & Qualifications**:
- A current criminal record check including vulnerable sector (completed in the last 6 months)
- A current Alberta Intervention Record check (completed in the last 6 months)
- Degree or Diploma in Human Services or related field is preferred
- Current First Aid and CPR ‘C’
- Must be able to drive own vehicle (no GDL licenses)
- Must have a safe and reliable vehicle with room for mínimally 3 passengers
- An ability to work as part of a dynamic team and confidence working independently in both in-house and in-community in a 1(staff) to 3(client) ratio.
- Experience working with children with developmental disabilities and complex needs are desirable
- De-escalation skills will be essential to this role
- Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, Suicide Intervention, Indigenous Teachings are an asset
