**Your role**
Canada’s award-winning consumer affairs program Marketplace is looking for the next great producer to join our team of experienced investigative journalists and innovative storytellers.
So, if you’ve got the ability to find stories beyond the headlines, to juggle multiple projects, a natural irreverence, an obsession with getting the facts right, a flair for visual storytelling, and the passion to dig deeper into the biggest consumer stories of our times, then this job is made for you.
You will pitch great ideas and oversee and participate in deep dive research, being dogged in pursuit of answers while curious and open to where the facts take you.
You will exhibit a deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience so that it is reflected in all programming and editorial decisions.
You will demonstrate initiative, creativity and innovation in storytelling.
You have excellent journalistic judgment and a comprehensive knowledge of the CBC’s journalistic standards and practices and media law as it applies to investigative stories.
You are organized and nimble and have great interpersonal skills and an ability to coordinate the work of others.
Please note that we are hiring for a permanent full-time role based in Toronto.
**Key Tasks**:
- Under the direction of the Senior Producer (and Executive Producer) conceives and develops segment or episode ideas and concepts appropriate for use on the program whether on television, online or streaming.
- Oversees the research, shooting, editing, encoding, digitizing and packaging of digital audio and video for multiple platforms.
- Participates in the preparation of program objectives.
- Develops episode content including assigning, researching, gathering, writing and/or editing.
- Writes digital articles and features about Marketplace investigations; familiar with CBC.ca’s writing style guide.
- Selects, re-writes and/or edits copy or text written by others.
- Plans, organizes and coordinates the completion of an episode or the components and/or segments of an episode.
- Plans, selects and requests, in collaboration with the Unit or Business Manager and Executive Producer, the financial and production/resource requirements including the creative contributors and other participants, the material and facilities.
- During program preparation, production and post-production, is responsible and accountable for meeting budget expectations.
- Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by show leadership (Senior Producer and Executive Producer)
- Evaluates all facets of a production including the performance of program and production personnel, and freelance contributors.
- As required, performs the following tasks: Directs talent and editors of sound and images.
- Ability to work on long-term investigations as well as quick turnaround projects.
- A university degree or equivalent.
- Proven field-producing and directing experience in currents affairs or long-form investigative
- Requires a superior level of technical knowledge and understanding of television program production and post-production methods.
- Advanced understanding of CBC’s journalistic policies and practices, not limited to but including: use of unscheduled interviews, use of hidden cameras and other frequently-employed investigative techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to ensure under-served communities are reflected in story development
- Experience with hidden camera technology, and ethical and legal issues related to its use.
- An understanding of consumer journalism, and the tools needed to achieve it.
- Ideally will have experience in FOI, ATIP requests and familiarity with product testing.
- Ideally will have experience in legal aspects of broadcasting, specific to consumer reporting.
- Able to work well with experienced associate producers, producers and hosts to develop and produce high-impact current affairs programming, under tight deadlines.
