Job Description:
Position Overview:
The SHN Research Institute (RI) is intended to provide opportunities for Researchers within SHN and externally (national and international) from diverse disciplines to collaborate, share knowledge and perform research critical to and directly beneficial to the communities of Scarborough. The RI is intended to promote research within the community and centralize Scarborough as a hub, showcasing the strengths of its diversity. The Research Director will work closely with the VP of Research to develop and promote SHN’s research vision and mandate. They will play a critical role in elevating the priority and enhancing the profile of research at SHN. They will focus on innovative opportunity generation for commercialization endeavours and interventional pre and post marketing trials beneficial to the communities of Scarborough. They will cultivate and promote an active, ambitious, and inclusive research culture and their work will increase the activity, supports, and successes in seeking and securing research funding opportunities for enhanced research impact.

Organizationally, the Director will develop and oversee implementation and operations (in collaboration with the research manager) of an independent financial structure and system for the RI. They will lead the innovation aspect to revitalize the research portfolio and the business aspect of leading requests for proposals (RFP) and related processes. The role requires the development and implementation of an intellectual property framework and employs both proprietary and custom methodologies designed to help clients solve their innovation and commercialization related business problems. The Director is expected to have an entrepreneurial focus in order to seek out and initiate and steward collaborative relationships with professional associations, funding agencies, and private, public
- and non-profit stakeholder organizations and industry partners. They will work to secure external funding and settle partnership agreements. They will also work to develop and maintain similar internal relationships with departmental and division leads and SHN and RI affiliates. The Director will identify suitable funding opportunities based on research programs and goals and initiate/support funding proposal. The director will develop business cases and business plans.

As the operational leader of these portfolios, the Director enhances the capacity, priority, strategic success, and impact of research conducted through SHN. Through effective governance representation, meaningful engagement with stakeholders, and policy development, they will contribute to the maturation of the RI. As the primary business innovation delegate, the Director will champion and represent SHN research funding priorities, capabilities, and opportunities on behalf of RI as needed.

The RI will play a crucial role in fulfilling the research and academic strategic initiatives of the organization including building research capacity and promoting commercialization endeavours. The Director will be knowledgeable in SHN and SHNRI policies and guide development of necessary policies, processes, SOPS and tools/resources for their portfolios in order to move the institutes activities forward in a way that maximises impact both internally and externally. The Director will lead a multidisciplinary team providing mentorship and promoting skills development and work collaboratively with Medical Education on various funding initiatives and projects.
