Equipment Operator

Overview: The Equipment Operator is assigned to carry out the safe operation of University equipment and vehicles in the course of the physical maintenance and care of the University grounds, roadways and parking lots, contributing towards providing a safe and accessible campus environment through service excellence. Payment of union dues applicable. Must possess and maintain a valid "D" class driver's license. **There are 2 positions available.** Shifts are either 6:00am until 2:30pm or 7:30am until 4:00pm. May have to work nights during the winter months. **Responsibilities**: Strategic Planning - Supports strategic planning efforts addressing stewardship responsibilities and long-term sustainability of the University’s campus, facilities and infrastructure and maximizing opportunities for efficient delivery of campus services and optimal investments in University-wide infrastructure. Operations - Operation of large tractors and attachments for cutting grass, rolling, aerating, grooming and snow plowing - Operation of dump trucks, front end loaders, road sweepers and other off-road equipment - Operation of pickup trucks with plow attachments, sanders and trailers - Installation of hard and soft landscaping - Performs all duties of a groundsperson Health & Safety - In consideration of the University’s commitment to the safety and well-being of all faculty, support staff, students, and visitors, responsible for ensuring University facilities and departmental activities are compliant with all applicable legislation, regulations, codes and standards related to facilities operations as well as occupational health and environmental safety. Active in health and safety and incident prevention by adhering to departmental policy, procedures and safe work practices required by the University health, safety and environment management system (HSEMS), and in accordance with relevant health and safety legislation, developing and enhancing a safety culture among support staff. Other - Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned and supports departmental activities, including performing work of other classifications within scope of trade practice, level of incumbent’s capability/ competency/ skills, and/ or regulatory requirements. May perform work of a lower classification/ pay band. Qualifications: - High school or equivalent - Two years recent experience using wheel loaders, dump trucks, Trackless, farm tractors from 30hp to 80hp - Must possess and maintain a valid “D” driver’s license class to operate heavy clutch driven University equipment on and off campus - Acceptable current Driver’s Abstract required - Safe operation of a variety of heavy equipment including large tractors, loaders and pickup trucks with plow attachments - Experience with the operation of snow removal equipment - Ability to read and write procedures, guidelines, instructions and labels - Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions - Demonstrated ability to perform all the duties of a Groundsperson - Basic knowledge of landscape maintenance of shrubs, trees and flowers - Must be customer and team oriented, as well as self-motivated and able to work successfully with mínimal supervision Equity Statement: The University of Waterloo acknowledges that much of our work takes place on the traditional territory of the Neutral, Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee peoples.
