As the Ministry of Forestry and Parks we are responsible for growing Alberta’s environmentally responsible wood products and forestry sector. We protect Alberta’s forests from wildfire and preserve our provincial parks for the recreation and enjoyment of Albertans. As well as enabling access to public lands for recreational and commercial purposes while prioritizing conservation. Forestry and Parks also manages public lands and balances sustainable rangelands and grazing leases for Alberta producers.
**Role Responsibilities**:
As the resource analyst you are a professional that provides quantifiable information to support forest planning at multiple landscape scales. You perform a variety of spatial and statistical analyses, timber supply forecasts and geospatial tasks to inform senior management for decision making to ensure divisional business is completed. Your review of submitted forest management plans and recommendations help to determine the acceptability of annual harvest levels proposed by companies and allows the Division to adjust harvest levels over time.
You have a high degree of originality and creativity when interpreting the results of resource analysis into real world terms and designing output products (e.g. summary tables, digital maps, graphs) that meet the end user requirements. You can take complex data sets and effectively explain what is needed to various internal and external stakeholders. You easily recognize what strategy is most effective while following policy. Most importantly you can demonstrate objectivity when presenting your analysis to decision makers. If this describes you as a professional forester, then we encourage you to apply.
- Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Evaluate complex technical analyses submitted by forest industry to ensure that proposed harvest levels and harvest patterns can be approved by the Executive Director, Forest Management and Wildfire Mitigation (FMWM) branch.
- Resolve complex wood supply issues to inform decision makers.
- Execute landscape level resource analyses (e.g. land base impact assessment) to allow the province to adjust allowable cuts.
- Provide with confidence ongoing support to forest planning through geospatial practices such as mapping, spatial data creation and maintenance as well as scripting.
- Contribute insightfully to the review and development of best practices as well as policy related materials to help clarify the Division’s expectations on sustainable forest planning.

**Qualifications**:
Education and Experience:
A forest management degree, plus 4 years related experience or a related two-year forestry technical diploma plus 6 years related experience.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered based on:
1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
1 year of experience for 1 year of education.

- Registration (or eligibility to register) with Alberta Association of Forest Management Professionals.
- Advanced understanding of the underlying principles and concepts of both spatial and aspatial Timber Supply modelling.
- Advanced working knowledge of programming/modelling skills in Remsoft Woodstock optimization software, Patchworks, as well as ArcPRO/Python 3.
- Thorough understanding of vegetation inventory classification systems.
- Thorough working knowledge of the underlying principles and concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
