**POSITION: MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION DRIVER**

**HOUR OF WORK: FULL-TIME, PERMANENT (35 HRS/WEEK)**

**REPORTS TO: HEALTH DIRECTOR**

**WAGE: $21/hour**

***:The Health Department, in collaboration with the Tsawout First Nation (TFN) and broader community, is responsible for increasing the capacity and sustainability of the Department and enhance engagement/ownership of the health of the TFN community. The Department develops and implements health programs that incorporate the traditions, values and strengths of the Nation. The Health Department delivers a range of community health programs and health promotion services to the TFN community.

**PURPOSE OF THE POSITION**: The Medical Transportation Driver is a member of the Home & Community Care Team within the Health Department and provides medical transportation to community members/clients to attend medical related appointments throughout the Capital Regional District in a safe and efficient manner. In addition, the Medical Transportation Driver provides outreach and care management support to clients with high medical and physical needs.

**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES**
- Maintains a schedule by directly booking appointments with Members requiring transportation services, adheres to scheduled appointments pickup and drop off time; manages time and schedules in an efficient manner and immediately reports delays and accidents to the Home Care Coordinator;
- Keeps daily records of all services provided to clients;
- Attends to client needs and assists with the loading and unloading of clients in a safe manner;
- Maintains composure during crises situations;
- Drives along predetermined routes, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all onboard
- Ensures clients are picked up on time for transportation to appointments and delivers them home afterward;
- Uses standard maps or the GPS to map out short and safe routes to destinations;
- Completes a pre and post trip vehicle inspection report and activity report daily;
- Reports any medical van mechanical problems to the Home Care Coordinator;
- Ensures that any mechanical problems are resolved so that clients are transported safely at all times;
- Must be familiar with and adhere to the Fleet Vehicle Policy;
- Ensures that preventative and regular maintenance is completed on the van and that the van is maintained in a safe, clean condition;
- Ensures the van is cleaned and sanitized daily including garbage removal, spill clean-ups etc.;
- Ensures that clients remain seated and will discipline them in a firm but respectful and fair manner as required to ensure their safety;
- In case of vehicle failure, takes the necessary measures to ensure that the clients are transported to their destinations as safely and quickly as possible;
- Completes various forms and records, including updated route sheets, time sheets, incident and accident reports;
- Drives carefully and in compliance with traffic regulations; and pays any traffic violation tickets incurred while driving the vehicle;
- Monitors areas of responsibility for opportunities for improvement and innovation and works proactively to implement these;
- Attends departmental meetings and events as required;
- Participates in relevant training and workshops identified by the Home Care Coordinator to enhance program services;
- Ensures that service quality standards are maintained and consistently delivered in all areas of responsibility;
- Develops effective working relationships with clients, families and co-workers by assisting in the resolution of issues and complaints and refers them to the Home Care Coordinator when required;
- Presents a professional, positive and helpful attitude at all times;
- Promotes a safe workplace; ensures that all established safety procedures are followed;
- Carries out other duties essential to the position as directed by the Home Care Coordinator

**EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE**
- Grade 12 graduation (Dogwood or BC Adult Graduation Diploma);
- Experience working with elders or disabled persons an asset;
- Food Safe Level 1 certificate;
- Valid standard first aid and CPR certificate;
- Class 5 driver’s licence and reliable vehicle plus a clean driver’s abstract is required;
**KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES**
- Thorough knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, and of the precautions necessary to avoid accidents;
- Ability to operate a vehicle in a safe and economical manner;
- Ability to drive long distances in unfamiliar geographical areas.
- Ability to deal with emergencies and stressful situations in a calm and professional manner;
- Ability to provide, obtain or follow clear, concise and accurate information orally and in writing;
- Ability to establish and maintain respectful, cooperative and productive working relationships with a variety of individuals to complete work assignments;
