Job Summary
Organizational Status
CORD is an interdisciplinary SCI research centre in the Faculty of Medicine. ICORD researchers are based at the Blusson Spinal Cord Centre, UBC Point Grey Campus, Vancouver General Hospital, GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, and other sites in Greater Vancouver and across Canada.
The research assistant reports to Dr. Andrei Krassioukov, Director of the Autonomic Research Unit. The research assistant works closely with other laboratory members including clinical research coordinators, postdoctoral research fellows, and graduate students. The research assistant liaises frequently with members of Dr. Krassioukov s Discovery Science laboratory at ICORD, other ICORD faculty, staff, and trainees, researchers at other institutions, and current and potential research participants.
Work Performed
Assisting with human-based research study activities including:
- assisting with cardiovascular, bladder function, and cognition assessment on research participants with SCI. This will involve aiding patients during evaluations (e.g. holding a paralyzed arm in appropriate position);
- administering questionnaires to research participants in person;
- performing data entry and assisting with analysis of research results from studies, including reading and interpreting clinical charts from which data is gleaned;
- assists with participant recruitment;
- scheduling appointments;
- assists with the preparation of technical figures for manuscripts;
- performing other related duties from time to time as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position is not required to make major decisions, but poor choices when prioritizing tasks and/or carelessness during the performance of research duties to could reduce the quality of research conducted in the lab and jeopardize the lab s ability to secure future funding by competing for research grants.
Supervision Received
The research assistant will work independently from day to day, and will attend weekly lab meetings. Depending on specific research task assigned, work may be checked daily, weekly or infrequently by the supervisor or supervisor s designate. The research assistant will report to clinical coordinator, to the senior postdoctoral fellow, as well as to the Principal Investigator. Receives instruction from clinical coordinator or senior postdoctoral fellow regarding specific research tasks. The research assistant will have the opportunity to learn and carry out tasks of increasing responsibility over the course of the year. He/she will be encouraged to ask questions and make suggestions regarding writing questionnaires and data collection and organization.
Supervision Given
Although the research assistant does not actually supervise any other staff on a regular basis, he/she may act as a resource for undergraduate work study and directed studies students and supervise volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation, some additional training in a related field and a minimum two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree with coursework in neurobiology, developmental neurobiology, neuroanatomy or psychology an asset. Successful completion of Health Canada TCPSII Certification per UBC CREB requirements. Experience in data analysis with statistical software an asset. Ability to perform research-related procedures (e.g., measuring blood pressure, work with database computer based programs such as excel and access, familiarization with UBC Ethics process for research. Required skills include ability the ability to use MS Office programs at an intermediate level, and statistical analysis programs at an advanced level.
